Hey All,
I'm back from a fun session at Blue mountain. I was rocking out to the new TI/Justin Timberlake song and I arrived at the lower lot around 4PM...there were already 8 buses and a couple hundred cars. I managed to score a sweet parking spot right along the fence. The temperature was 30 degrees with gusty winds out of the northwest. Initially there wasn't much of a liftline for the 6-pack. I rode the first lift up with Garrett whose a J3 racer who A-Jeff and I have skied with a bunch the past couple seasons. He was doing race training which meant Razors Edge was closed. I started out on Challenge which was pretty icy but still edgeable except for a few sections that were so shiny..you could see your reflection.
I skied Paradise the most..they groomed it just before I arrived so it had the softest snow and initially there weren't that many people on it. Around 430PM the line for the 6-pack was outside of the corral and even the VIP line was long..but a ski patroller took it upon himself to kick people out of the VIP line who didn't belong there.. nice work..by the next run..I saw out of the corner of my eye that the quad was open and myself and a hundred others from the 6-pack line high-tailed it over to the quad line. From then on there wasn't more than a one minute wait but the runs obviously were more crowded. I skied Switchback which was icy and a little chunky..definitely not worth a repeat. I hit Dreamweaver a few times and I'm still figuring out how to ski the run. The beginning you can drop in immediately for a steeper start or go across the trail and then drop in more gradually..anyway..a new run at Blue with several ways to ski it is mad steezy in my book. The trails merging sign at the bottom of Dreamweaver is now replaced by a slow skiing sign and alot of people stop by the sign blocking the way..yes I expect alot of carnage there.
A beautiful sunset and the moon was about 7/8th and really bright..all the trees on the upper mountain were covered in ice and the strong winds made for some explosions of falling ice. I thought about doing Nastar but with the wind blowing right up the mountain and the snow on the icy..sugary side..I decided against it. A couple more fast runs and I was ready to head out and save my legs for possible deep powder this weekend. All in all conditions were on the rough side except for Paradise and Lazy Mile which were regroomed..but it's Pennsylvania so things will change. I'll most likely be out there again tomorrow afternoon..anybody else???
