Miller Becomes Most Successful American Skier Ever

POSTED: 10:49 am EST January 21, 2008

KITZBUEHEL, Austria -- New Hampshire's Bode Miller now is the most successful American skier ever, with 28 World Cup wins, overtaking Phil Mahre. Miller won the combined title Sunday for the slalom and Saturday's downhill at the Hahnenkamm World Cup races in Austria. Earlier this week, he accused organizers of making the famous Streif downhill course much bumpier and dangerous than it already was. He also criticized organizers for disrespecting the 68-year-old history of the event by changing the slalom course.
But the win gave Miller something to cheer about. He said it is a nice record, something a kid dreams about having. He said it was his goal to break the record.

With Fourth Win, Miller Climbs Atop World Cup Standings

Associated Press
Monday, January 28, 2008; Page E03

His hip so sore he questioned if he could ski, Bode Miller won a super combined yesterday in Chamonix, France, and took over first place in the World Cup overall standings.

Miller won for the fourth time this season and catapulted from third to first in the standings, overtaking previous leader Benjamin Raich of Austria.

"I was wondering this morning if I could ski," Miller said. "I fell Saturday during the slalom practice. I have a bruised left hip."

First, Go BODE Go!!! He has really picked up his skiing the last month or more and if you have been following the races, no real surprise he's now at the top. Let's hope he can stay there and get the overall again!!

Now, this is my post from about 2 weeks ago:

I'm just psyched he won these 2 races and sure as hell hope he wins at least one more. I think Phil Mahre's constant bad mouthing of Bode is awful. At least now, Bode is the most decorated American Skier. Now if he can only win at least one more overall. I don't want to jinx him but he seems to be skiing really well. And, moreover, he is getting stronger now as the season progresses.

And to show that I'm not totally full of sh*t, here is an article from WCSN.COM: (I swear I had no idea this article was coming out!)

Same site, from Bode's blog:

It's not a huge deal if I beat Mahre's record of three overall titles. Of all my skiing accomplishments, it's not that great. To win a lot of World Cups is great, but to win more than everyone else in the U.S. isn't really that huge. And not to take anything away from Mahre, but there hasn't really been anyone who has been that great in U.S. history anyway.

All true for the most part...and nothing unexpected from Bode...as he is/was never one to talk about results etc...or at least always downplaying them. But, he is now 8th on the all-time win list..Pretty impressive, American or not. (whether Bode admits it or not!). And he's still going strong! (Stenmark's 86 is just beyond imagination!).
