Did anyone hear about this one?!?! It's flown entirely under my radar till now. They appear to be serious about becoming the new Whistler without the chance of rain in just a few short years!

It's possible this place could bring a whole new meaning to "stoked" ???

Yeah, I heard about that a few months back. Could be a heck of a resort.

It's certainly an ambitious plan. I don't know if I'd go as far as saying it will be the next Whistler though. A big part of Whistler's success is it's access. Revelstoke is in the middle of nowhere. But 6100 vert and double the snow of Whistler at a resort with 3000 acres certainly is a HUGE undertaking and obviously the biggest north american ski development in many many years. It sounds fantastic.

I went cat skiing there with Cat Powder in 2000...back then there was talk about creating the resort that now seems to be a sure bet. The terrain is vast and varied, wide open bowls, tight steep tree shots, gentle powder meadows...thousands of acres of terrain ripe for th picking. We had a great 5 days of cat skiing in the last week of March, still plenty of cold, dry powder even though it hadn't snowed for 10 days. I'd make a trip back there for sure...it would be nice to explore all their terrain without the restraint of a powder farming guide. There's not much of a "ski town" there yet...more like an old railroad/logging town...they've got a long way to go before they can give Whistler a run for its $$ when it comes to ammenities and apres...but terrain wise, all they need are some lifts...lots and lots of lifts. Save your greenbacks, it'll be worth the trip.

Ps. they'll need that airport...otherwise its almost a 6hr drive from Calgary...more if they're doing avi control at Rogers (?) pass.

This has been talked about for a few years now. Its pretty far out of the way from any major metropolitan area, and road travel there Ive heard to be sketchy. Id be suprised if this is up and running within 5 years at the earliest. Sounds like a hell of a place though.......

I heard the same thing last year and the year before. Also, I dont think theyre opening up the full amount, just a lift or two. Believe me, Ill believe it when I see it.

Dude, they're installing 35 million dollars worth of lifts right now and have an opening date of mid December. It's a go! You don't push forward with that kind of investment and then choke. They also have 3 more lifts already coming for next year including another gondola. With completion dates only a year out, the deposit has already been paid for those too.

Access. The airport in Revelstoke is for very small planes only to the best of my knowledge. HOWEVER, you do not have to fly to Calgary or Vancouver...Kelowna, 120 miles away with no passes is served by Westjet (Canada's second largest airline) which runs 100 BRAND NEW 737's. Kelowna may also be served by Air Canada, but I'm not sure. I just checked Expedia, And Kelowna is also served by Alaskan Airlines. Boston to Kelowna in Jan right now is only $500.

Lodging and Tics. There is a brand new Super 8 and a New Comfort Inn located in Revelstoke, 3 miles from the Gondola. Although they're not deluxe, They're atleast new and likely 1/3 the cost of the cheapest offer at Whistler in high season. Mid january rates look to be around $115 a night. Lift tickets for this season are $56, which is cheap even with the exchange. Revelstoke has a long list of pubs and restaurants as well. It's not exactly an outpost. They have a Denny's. Need I say more?

This place depends on what you want. It's basically going to be like helicopter skiing without the price tag for season one I think. I googled the hell out of it last night when I discovered it was a go. :daffy:

If you meant that they won't achieve full build-out for another five years, then say it. They are opening this year with over 5K in vertical, a new gondi and I believe a HSQ. Check out the pics on their website. They've already sold out most of their Phase 1 real estate, which as you know drives the whole shebang. I don't know if it ultimately will be a huge success - access is still difficult IMO, but it will be open this year and you can book their planned lift and terrain expansion for at least next year. Even if they "only" completed what's on tap this year and next, it would be one of the most significant developments in the biz for decades.

Exactly. this place could be quite something by as early as next winter. Kicking horse is on the other side of the pass too, which was the other newest development in North America, and Silverstar is between Kamploops and Revelstoke. For that reason, I think Revelstoke may well become the new Banff and steal a lot of biz from Whistler as well. Whistler can be a bit of a crap shoot weather wise, and access to it is pretty crappy as well. Whistler is a lot closer to an international airport, however, in travel time it's probably further than Kelowna to Revelstoke. 737's at the very least can land in Kelowna. If this thing takes off, service to that airport will jump in the winter time. Kamloops is also the same distance and is also served by Alaskan and A/C and sends you to Revelstoke on a straight run on the trans canada so that road should be really good. I think I'll hit this place up in March maybe. After they've got all the bugs worked out of the new lifts

I've known about Revelstoke for about 2 years. It was discussed over on the TGR, Epicski, PASR, and the Ski-Vermont discussion list. I think I might go there in March..it's not often one gets to visit a new ski resort the year it opens. I missed my chance with Moonlight Basin Montana when I lived in Bozeman..Time to drool over their trail map..:snow:

I never got hit with that? Odd? Are you using something Netscape or something?? That IS lame. That's lost business. I would potentially surf on at that point.
