Beautiful cold Sunday at Bretton Woods. Not a cloud in the sky all day long with excellent pp pretty much everywhere that was open (about 60 trails). Car thermometer read 3 degrees in the parking lot when we arrived at 9:00 am, but there was very little wind all day. The cold was only a minor problem. It gave us an excuse to take a break and with such nice snow conditions we really couldn't gripe about numb toes.
They open at 8:00, but there was still plenty of good parking at 9:00. Maybe people were getting ready for playoff parties or were scared off by the cold. Lucky us, because we didn't see a line all day. We saw a lot of fellow skiers on the highway with us, but they all faded after the exit for Loon.
The mountain is very well set up. Right outside the lodge you grab a lift that takes you most of the way up the mountain, then take a sweet little run down to the summit lift which gives you access to the entire mountain. I know experts complain about the lack of challenging terrain, but the variety is great. There is no excuse to keep taking the same runs at Bretton Woods. Very easy to take a different way down every time.
Heading up 93 we saw this huge cloud filling Franconia Notch. Since there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was way too cold for fog we couldn't figure out what the heck it was. Then we starting thingking maybe it was the snow guns at Cannon. But it couldn't be, this thing was huge. Then we got closer and saw that it was indeed the snoguns at Cannon. Impressive. Wish I'd taken a picture.
