Bretton Woods 11/29/09

pp/manky chowder/some dense untracked/slighty springlike in spots early p.m. Fairly incredible amount of open terrain and excellent cover. I don't know if I'd call this a "powder day" as the pow (which fell Sat into early Sun) mostly was sorta styrofoamy, though it did soften a little in some lower locations as temps warmed.

My boys and I did numerous runs down Fabyan's. Had a lot of fun on the ungroomed side of that once I adjusted to my new midfat skis and the grabby conditions. Sampled various other goods including a lightly tracked Black Forest Glades - first trees of the season! Also took one interesting run down Mt Road Traverse, which is flat but crouching to ski under downed trees provided a certain challenge ... and lower levels of Two Miles Home, with a little more pitch, had some long stretches of fairly creamy untracked on the sides.

Props to BW for opening so many trails despite some major water bars. They did warn that anything ungroomed was to be considered advanced, but for a place with a rep for being fairly tame, this decision was pretty bold. Thumbs up.

Thanks all! It was pretty striking when the moon first rose over Mt. Washington but I was on the chair and by the time I got my camera out, trees were blocking the view - and by the time I got off the chair the moon was behind clouds. That was around 2:30 so there was no alpenglow then anyway.
