Date(s) Skied: March 5th & 6th
Resort or Ski Area: Bretton Woods
Conditions: Powder!
Trip Report:
My wife and I had originally got the TravelZoo deal that let us stay at the Mt. Washington Hotel for one night and ski for two days with a 4 course dinner and breakfast included ($300!!!) back in January, but due to a really sick cat we couldn't make it. Graciously, they allowed us to reschedule to March 5th and 6th and we didn't have any choice so we took it.
Good deal, I think it started snowing on Friday and didn't stop until Monday (about 2' of snow came down). According to the locals, it was flurries the whole time, and just kept coming.
Not a whole lot of people for a Sunday, but the conditions were great but got skied off by the afternoon. Only things that were really closed were most glades in the Rosebrook Canyon area and some glades elsewhere. Since Bretton Woods is an easier mountain, I was disappointed by this, but if you don't have a base, then it's just powder on top of rocks and wood (which doesn't make your skis very happy).
Anyways, we spent the day pretty much together all over the mountain, some areas towards the center got skied off pretty quick, but others were nice and powdery (I call it soupy ala Stratton's Duck Soup trail) all day long.
On Monday, they had groomed a number of trails, and some were left to the powder gods as well. It had snowed pretty much all night and kept snowing until the middle of the afternoon. We spent the day all over the mountain, great conditions (minus some exposed rocks from a little wind and a number of other riders), no lines, and we had a great time.
Towards the end of the day, I finally ducked one of the ropes for the Rosebrook glades and was glad I picked the trail that I did. It was a little bit hairy around a brook (not a good place for it to be hairy), but I followed the tracks of others who had the same idea and had no problems. We took more run and that was it.
All in all, a great trip. We got really lucky with the conditions, and I'm glad we did because we probably would not have been happy with what was there before the snow.
