Date Skied: March 8, 2011

Resort or Ski Area: Bromley, VT

Conditions: Frozen Granular, Packed Powder

Trip Report: We took a family ski trip to Bromley and were supposed to leave for the mountain on Sunday evening but with the torrential rain changing to freezing rain around Albany we decided it would be safer to leave Monday morning. That was a good choice not just because of the weather but because the mountain was closed yesterday because of the ice. We arrived yesterday around 2 PM and it was snowing, the freezing rain had turned to snow early in the day and they got a few inches of snow on top of the ice. They were busy grooming and cleaning up the mountain yesterday and last night and today it was very good considering the ice storm. BTW there was about a half inch of ice on the trees on the bottom 2/3 of the mountain and the top third there was just over an inch of ice on the trees. I saw a branch break and fall and heard quite a few others during my lift rides.

After getting my son into his "mountain club" and getting my wife set for her lesson and my daughter checked into the day care I hit the mountain alone. They had a little over half the mountain open but the Sun Mountain Express detachable was shut down until 3 PM so I was riding double chairs all day until the last run which I rode the HSQ. The conditions were very good with groomed packed powder and frozen granular. The blue cruisers were very fun and fast to ski. Unfortunately most of the East side blacks were closed as they are usually ungroomed which I would imagine were pretty much unskiable. They groomed a few of them and they skied really well and at least they were steep and fast. All in all a very good day with bluebird skies and afternoon temps in the mid 30's which with the Southern exposure softened the snow up nicely. Tomorrow should be a really nice day with most of the mountain open and similar weather.

I still have some tickets left for Bromley - how are the base depths holding up and does anyone know their "usual" closing date?

The base depths were very good, website says 20" - 38", I did not see any bare spots. Today was colder than forecast and cloudy all day so it made for hard snow today but it was good skiing. Cloudy at the top all day, you could see Stratton and Magic shrouded in clouds at the top too.
