Resort or Ski Area: Burke
Conditions: Widespread 4'' with spot 8'' of powder on top of ice, rocks and frozen dirt
Trip Report: I got a late start (9:15) because the ride up was a difficult one with snowpacked roads north of franconia notch. Excepting one run down the groomed willoughby I stayed mostly on the ungroomed dippers. The dippers were skiing like a black because you couldnt tell what was under the powder and had to rely on feel. This was a great day and also one of those days that really works your legs. I was still skiing untracked until around 1:00 when the powder started to turn to crud. There will be some really nice soft bumps on the dippers for the weekend. I stayed out of the trees because I was by myself but they looked very nice with random lines everywhere.
They had trouble with the upper mountain quad all day. At one point I was stuck on it for thirty minutes and at another point it was closed for thirty minutes. When it was running it would stop multiple times per ride and when it wasnt you could count on a rediculous line for the poma which for some reason they only let you take half way up.
I skiied Burke every February vacation during the late 80's and early 90's but this was my first trip back in about 5 years. Burke was exactly as I remember it: very friendly, not too expensive, easily accesable and it also holds natural snow better than anywhere else in the east. Burke is also in major need of some infastructure improvements, they need to either replace the upper mountain lift or add a lift on the dipper side. They also need snowmaking improvements to build a better base and a lodge expansion. Midburke lodge was unbearable around 1:00 yesterday.
As the new owners continue to invest in Burke it will be a fine line between improving the overall experience and maintaining the old school feel that makes Burke special. Lets hope they understand this and continue to invest with this in mind.
