Quick report.
Conditions - Packed powder, Glades - PP, Groomers - dust on crust, lots of scrappy flats. Great people
Burke was having a "Jay Peak" kind of day. Great in the glades, not so much on the groomers. Pretty much hit hearly everything on the mountain.
I'd never been in the Sherburne Lodge before. What a class act compared to the bedlam of Mid Burke. Definitely the place for a visitor to spend their first day. The lodge got extra points for a) bathroom on the same level, a free basket check right across from the sitting area that was fast and friendly and free. Nice booting up area. No pretensions. I was warned to stay away from Mid Burke, there was a race going on there, the whole day. Ate lunch with an Ambassador, interesting discussion.
As an editorial remark, I don't think Burke has done a very good job of promoting themselves. In a world of over-promotion, I think Burke has really under-sold itself. It's been portrayed as some small, two-bit operation out in the sticks, rough around the edges. Say it ain't so! If your expereince has only been at mid-Burke, you're in for a huge wake-up call when you walk into the Sherburne lodge. It's really a class act, very modern faciltiies but very lodgey (a new word?) inside. The people are very engaging. Lots of families and tons of people learning to ski. Their groomers and glades are right up there with some of the biggest resorts. Food is great, I had a Buffalo chicken wrap. They make everything fresh for you, like a deli. It's only this year that they have stepped up the tone, and I think that's good.
Rock Star parking at 10AM - first row.
Began snowing around 11 and quit around 3. Nice little topping, but not much to change things.
It was really quite busy there, which is great news, but they still stick by their 5-minute or less lift line guarantee.
East Bowl was beautiful scenery.
The woods on the left side (looking uphill from the lodge) were great full of pow, if you extended yourself a litte (not oob). The woods to the R. were a bit bony from over-use. These pics are from the left side. I hit about six of the ten glades. I skipped "Thrombulator" hitting the ones on either side. It gives you bragging rights, but it's fairly tame.
Still learning how to use this new cell phone camera. I don't think it likes me...
On the way home, I stopped by the welder's art work in Lyndeborough. He always has something new
