Date(s) Skied: Wednesday 2/29/12

Resort or Ski Area: Burke, VT

Conditions: PP, Variable Natural Stuff, upper 20s, cloudy

Trip Report:

Nice to FINALLY get a day with the mountain 100% open after all this waiting. Although the natural stuff has gotten completely beat to hell over the past few days (guess the rest of the northeast finally found out about Burke), the 6 new inches coming tomorrow will make things very mint.

Rerun: This is going to be a sweet liftline if they can get the stumps out. The rocks don't bother me, those stumps at the top have to go though. A nice drop off one of the rocks about halfway down, one more storm and it will be fun to hit without worrying about hitting the 15 little rocks underneath it on the landing. Lower part after Mcharg's had real nice snow. Watch out if you jump off the snowmaking pipe at the top of Doug's next to the Poma... nice mound where you land with low speed and it knocks the wind out of you if you hit it like I did.

Fox's: Not in the greatest shape... the big rocks are all covered in ice and skied off so some parts are pretty hairy. Snow isn't as good as rerun either. Again, the new snow will do wonders on this trail. Lonely feeling skiing it without the quad running.

Birches: Absolutely beat to hell... probably shouldn't even be open. Lots of stumps and rocks and ice all over the place. And this coming from someone who enjoys thin cover, but it really sucked. The next storm probably won't make it all that much better either.

Doug's Woods: Great cover... a little slick on come of the highly traveled areas, but that will be fixed up nice tomorrow. Fun to get into the thicker trees and enjoy the deep snow. Marshland was pretty good too... obviously a lot of slick spots but again good cover and should be nice Thursday and Friday.

East side: Hit Powerline and a couple tree shots down to East Bowl and Dixiland. Powerline was a bit of a mess but probably a better option than however Sasqwatch most likely looks right now. Crossing the steep on Wilderness sucked like usual. Is that trail ever not covered in ice? Off-map woods were covered great... skied off a bit because every local in the area was out in full force after the storm but in nice shape. Dixiland was also in good shape, will ski mint after tomorrow.

Jester: Took a few runs down it... fun stuff. Icy in some spots, but the birms were all soft and fun. The only spot that I didn't like was where it goes off the side of Bunker Hill and does a 180 in the woods and down the hill. VERY icy steep spot right there and a sharp drop off... almost flew off it myself, I'd hate to see a little kid go tumbling down.

I'll be back Friday for some freshies. Advice to everyone is to stay on the East side of the mountain (although I can't speak for Jungle) and stay the hell out of Birches if you value your skis and limbs.

I was there too, with my two most loyal skiing companions, who have vacation this week. First time for us all.

We had a great day! Fun mountain. Made a couple runs down Willoughby first thing, then poked around the rest of the day. We skied Cave Man and Ynot glades, which were pretty good, though my seven year old didn't love the traverse back out. That jester/enchanted forest mountain bike trail with all the banked turns were probably the highlight for them (and, by extension, me). We probably did it 5 times.

All the big academies seemed to be there for a race, so Mid Burke appeared to be totally over run. We stayed away.

The kids' first time riding a detatchable Poma. They loved it. My first time on one that has a dog leg. That was interesting.

Yeah... the lodge was a mess after they all left. Booted up in the "locker room" (to the left when you walk in), which had no people in it when I was in there (rest of the lodge was packed). I think today was the furthest away I've ever parked from mid-Burke (and that's still closer than just about any other mountain!).

As for the traverse... it was much worse a couple weeks ago. They've groomed it since the last snowstorm. Imagine what you had to do today PLUS waterbars and big dips and mounds and stuff. Not fun either way, but definitely less of a PITA than it was before lol.
