2006 Trip Report #: 13

Resort: Burke Mountain

Conditions: LG/Ice

Weather: Partly cloudy, becoming cloudy. Light wind. Temps in the 20’s and falling. 2-3 inches of new snow from the night before.

Trip Report: Decided to take some turns after spending a couple days in the flatlands….decision was between Snow, Pico, and Burke. Decided to get the driving done and hit Burke for a couple hours this afternoon. Plus I had to pick up my skis from the shop.

Pulled in at 1:45 and found Sherburne packed. The mountain actually looked like a ski area…with fresh frost and snow on the trees. I booted up and got on the HSQ. Long lines at the bottom despite the relatively thin snow. Headed right for the Willoughby Quad, which was empty. Gotta love Burke!

They had opened Shoot/Upper Bear Den since I had last skied the mountain….it was icy and skied off. The tie in from the Meadows to Upper Willoughby was very bare. Darling Point was a sheet of ice as was Lower Bear Den. But the extreme sides offered some good snow and bumps.

I did five or six runs off the top…sticking to Willoughby the rest of the afternoon, which provided better cover. The upper part of the trail was best on the right side and the lower part was best on skier’s left. I saw more than one person sliding or falling down the upper part, it was not pretty. I managed to get some good snow on the side….and my short 110 cm skis proved to be a good choice. With a 12 m radius, I was able to make some great short turns and avoid the ice.

Guns were going on Lower Fox’s (mainly water…), Binney Lane, Carter Country, and Lower Willoughby (which will be opening very soon….very deep base).

The trees had a nice “Currier and Ives” layer of frost and snow….even delicately covering the birches! It was quite a sight!
