2007-2008 Report # : 36
Trip Report: Hard core day. I figured that this day was going to be a washout...so I slept in at my parent's place. Mom had school cancelled, so that was not a good sign. It was raining a bit at 8am, so I was slow getting up. But radars suggested that there was a hole in the rain, so I decided to go for it...carpe diem I guess! Being on a pass, I figured I would take some runs on the lower mountain and then go home after getting soaked.
I passed East Burke Village and saw the original trailboss hard at work....I kept a low profile. Arriving at the mountain at 10am, I was greeted by showers and fog  (sigh)
I booted up and waited. The rain let up to a mist and I hit the lift. The first ride found me dodging dripping grease from the sheeves...I managed to avoid it....
I did a spin down Bunker Hill...and got a bit wet from the fog and rain....but the clouds were lifting and the rain had stopped. The Gore Tex was working.
Now I had said I was not skiing today. That changed. Then I said Lower Mountain only, well that changed too...
I headed to the top for a spin. I did East Bowl and found the snow soft...some debris from the trees, but good skiing. Plenty of cover.
With the winds and fog, I decided to make use of the Poma. I banged out several runs on that lift, rotating between Willoughby/Bear Den and Warren's Way. The latter was softer, and McHarg's was the softest...almost too soft...I spent about an hour here...working up a good sweet taking some great turns.
I headed to the top and took Carriage Road to Lower Powderhorn and Dipper Doodle. Nice. I then did Meadows to Lower Willoughby to the bottom.
It was noon. I had planned to head home at this point, and it was raining. I had seen the black clouds on the horizon. But after a break, and some thought, I headed back out after the rain. Good choice. The sun came out and it was amazing. Some nice runs on the Lower Mountain and then I headed to the top for Dippers and then Willoughby. The sun disappeared at about 1:30 and I finished with some runs on the lower mountain, leaving at 2pm.
Not bad for a rainy day!
Cover is holding up well...no crowds, but the folks came out for the sun...and nice soft snow.
