Resort or Ski Area: Cannon

Conditions: Icy or in the words of a Cannon employee: "Firm"

Weather: Cloudy, upper 20's and some flurries

Trip Report: Choose to ski Cannon because of their 2 for $60 Super Bowl Sunday. Arrived at about 9:00 and parked in the tram parking and took the tram to the summit. First run down took Upper Ravine. The snow was a fine grounded up hard pack with boiler plate underneath. Coverage started out good but as the day went on the ice patches grew. Taking the Cannon Ball Express back to the top and noticed a 1/4" of ice covering the seat backs and safety bars. Got off the lift and checked the snow on the edge of the trail. Poking with my pole there was about a 1/2" of dust followed by a 1/2" frozen crust layer.

The black diamond trails were the best because the received less traffic and the ice was controllable on them. The high traffic areas such as Big Link, Middle Cannon and Middle Cannon Bypass where solid ice. Lift lines were at the most only a dozen people long.

Skied until 3:00 and left to return in time for the game.

where its snowing
ditto

Yep, day started off good and glad I got there early. Bit more crowded than Superbowl Sundays of years past... I started on the Peabody side, warmed up with some of the ones I knew would get icy later. Got to the front five pretty early. Skylight off the top was my fav trail of the day.

Spent around lunchtime with some beginner friends over at the Tuckerbrook area.
That area seems to always have some of the best snow, as it is pretty sheltered from the wind and any crowds. Great for beginners, but runs are way too short and easy unless you want to work on your switch/fakie, or are trying some alternative equipment out...

It was a 'naturally' fast day, with turning an option only at times... A better day for skiers than riders as far as holding that occasional edge.... :daffy: as far as reputation go, icy yes, but there was little or no wind which is very unlike the Old Man's mountain.
