Cannon Mountain
packed powder, powder, some icy spots
Decided that I finally needed to hit Cannon, so I headed up there early Thursday morning. Even though that mountain has a reputation for being cold & windy, it was beautiful yesterday. Mid-high 30's at the base, high 20's at the top. Almost no wind. The holiday crowds were as expected, but I've dealt with much worse. At one point, the Peabody quad went out of service for a bit, which caused hour+ lines for the tram. I somehow managed to avoid getting stuck in either of those problems.
Most of the trails had plenty of snow, except a few sections that were scraped down to ice. But the icy spots were easy to see, so it wasn't a big deal. I was very impressed with the amount of snow they had overall.
Great conditions overall, and a great day. There were still a few spots with untracked powder from the storm, if you knew where to look or stumbled upon them by luck (which I did)
Biggest disappointment was that the Mittersill area was closed, entirely. Even though the website said on Wednesday night that it was open, it turns out they were (supposedly) load testing the new lift, and didn't want anyone on the trails at all. Meh. I really wanted to check it out. Guess a return trip later in the season is required.
