Canoeing in MWV area

thinking about taking a few days up in the Mount Washington Valley, mid-week and wanted to canoe 1/2 day - river trip, have my own canoe, don't really want to be on the saco, given that I've heard it can be very crowded/rowdy (am I wrong). looking for something that is relative calm in terms of water given wife and small children. any suggestions? details please, put in/take out, etc. thanks as always.

If you're doing mid-week, you don't have to worry about the Saco being too rowdy. The weekends are when it gets crowded/rowdy, probably more crowded than rowdy. When are you looking to go?

I kayaked the Androscoggin with my son last summer and it is decidedly NOT crowded and you have the benefit of route 16 following the river for most of it's length. Most of the river is quickwater with a few class I and II sections to keep things interesting. It is one of the few rivers in New England with water year round.

Errol rapid was the most exciting spot on the river with a class II section under the bridge in Errol, and you can run/play that section several times if you like.

There is also a paddling outfitter in Errol that runs shuttles on the river.

going up in a few weeks, camping on 302 near Bretton Woods. I've rented from that outfitter in Errol before - nice people. would definitely go back, we canoed from a drop off a few miles above umbagog (spelling wrong) to the dam in Errol - spent a couple of hours on the lake - great time.

this time I want to stay local. I may go to Moore Dam in Littleton and then do some biking up there too. we'll see. with small children I want to keep it mellow!

this should be perhaps posted as a new thread but dovetails into the Errol discussion - haven't even read the article yet but will vouch for this being a great time and beautiful part of NE. NH State parks have camp sites on the lake. For several of the Big Green Alums - I assume you are aware of the 2nd Grant and the accommondations there - very nice and definitely fish at Hell's Gate (even if you don't like to fish).
