Date(s) Skied: Saturday, 1/26/2008 , 8:50 am - 12:00 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Catamount Ski Area, South Egremont, Massachusetts

Conditions: Machine groomed, hard pack, frozen granular. Cloudy, calm, cold.

Trip Report: Had a short window to get some skiing in this morning. Went to Catamount with my father-in-law. Got started a bit before 9 am as the lot was filling up. The quad they installed prior to last year is a nice improvement.

The skiing was fair. Our first run was Sidewinder which is a nice little run that has a lot of character. It turns out to be a lot longer than you anticipate it to be. The surface early in the morning was firm machine groomed.

We skied Alley Cat next which actually had a lot of rocks and pebbles on the Upper section. Next was Glade, decent cover. The ungroomed section on skier's right was small bumps (mounds, really) with very thin cover. Off Stage has some freshly seeded bumps which were too far spaced and very slick between them. They also only seeded the lower 1/3 of the run.

We gave Catapult a try, but it was super slick hard pack. I really struggled on the Legends and assumed uber-Gaper position. Catapult is pretty difficult without sharp edges right now. In fact, one guy took a slide and was air-lifted out today.

Anyway, good to get out with the pops-in-law for a few hours, but Catamount could really use a nice dump of snow.

I was at Butternut yesterday with 2 of my sons & their friends. They've really done a great job with their snowmaking at Butternut this year. There was very little ice & lots of nice soft manmade, especially along the edges of the trails. Someone told me they've significantly increased their snowmaking capacity this year at Butternut & boy did it show. I never remember Butternut having that much manmade snow. Since they are so close to Catamount, that probably is the difference between our 2 experiences yesterday.
