Resort or Ski Area: Catamount Ski Area
Conditions: Machine groomed loose granular, hard pack, some fresh man-made snow
Trip Report:
In honor of the nearly one-year-anniversary of the infamous "Catamount is the WORST in the east" thread http://forums.alpinezone.com/showthread.php?t=91726&highlight=catamount+worst I decided to take a morning trip up to the hill.
Arrived at Catamount just after 8:30am, parked in the 2nd row of cars. The lifts were ski-on until about 10:30. The masses at Catamount had no idea how to form a proper queue, so getting to the "singles" lane involved some people slalom/ping-pong, but I rarely had to wait more than 2 minutes once I got in the line.
The morning started off really cold and the corduroy was basically frozen ridges. The snow started to soften up around 10am. There was some nice loose snow on skier's left down Upper Glade and some fresh man-made on Chute and the upper section of Off Stage. Every run had it's share of hidden and visible ice patches. I was going to skip skiing Catapult based on sound alone, lots of scraping and scratching. However, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, totally edgeable, particularly on the left hand side where the sun was hitting. ROTD was upper and lower Alley Cat, fast, uncrowded with some interesting dips and rolls.
No bumps to be found anywhere, in case anyone was looking for them....
Oh, and the Magic Carpet was attended at the top and the bottom. I did not, however, take a spin.
Catapult groomed flat
Looking down Upper Glade (I think)
It started getting really crowded and I had to get back to work, so left around 11:45.
I had a great time, talked to some friendly folks on the lifts and saw a guy skiing in a mountain lion costume (he was too quick for my camera). Catamount is NOT the worst in the east.
