Thursday AM Update:

CATSKILLS -

Hunter - 7" at the base, over 12" at the top. Snowmaking ongoing.

Windham - 4-6", snowmaking ongoing.

Beleayre - 6", snowmaking ongoing.

Plattekill - 7-8", snowmaking today.

I wonder if there's some BS going on there given what the others are reporting.

I'm also surprised that camelback has not started snowmaking. And I'm also wondering about Blue. But couldn't find any info about their status.

I'm not surprised Shawnee isn't making snow. It's really a cointoss. Temps are going to be touching up into the low-to-mid 40s up there for 7 of the next 8 days. So the lows in the 20s are great for making snow, but no doubt they'll lose some too.

snowboarder flying out of woods with out spotters.

Almost saw someone get killed last year at Smuggler's Notch from the above.

Teenage dumbazz flying out of woods doing Mach II, over about a 5 foot snow-ledge at the edge of the trail, nearly decapitated a skier who was skiing near the edge of the trail. I'd say the snowboarder missed him by no more than 5 or 6 feet.

"Comments:"
"Elk received approximately 3-5" of natural snow overnight. The crew
is beginning to make snow and will continue as the temperatures permit!"

There has been no snow blown at Camelback today as of 5:30, however, the lights on Margies, Rocket, and some others are on so I think it starts tonight:fangun::fangun::fangun:

I don't have confirmation about snowmaking at Shawnee, but one of their slideshow pictures shows snowmaking and their site states "making snow as temps permit". They also said on Facebook that snowmaking will resume Thursday, so I'm assuming - perhaps incorrectly - that they're making snow.

I'm also surprised that camelback has not started snowmaking. And I'm also wondering about Blue. But couldn't find any info about their status.

Per FB, Blue is gunning for Friday 16-Dec. Until then, its lottsa gas and miles to hunter

Elk will be opening Wednesday:

"Comments:
Elk will open for the 2011/2012 season on Wednesday, December 14, and will
be open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.! We will open with the Beginner's
Slope, East Slope, West Slope, Susquehanna and the Tioga, with 2-3 lifts
in operation."

...can't say if i'll go given early season lack of natural snow fall, but it is a lot closer to Philly then Hunter.

Camelback and Shawnee are also shooting for a Friday 12/16 opening. Mount Peter in NY is shooting for 12/17. Nothing for Hidden Valley in Jersey on their website yet. Mountain Creek says check back soon for an update on opening day. Temps here (10 minutes from MC) have been in the teens the last couple of nights so it should be soon

Where to go of Friday? (Pocono's)

Debating on heading to the Pocono's on Friday night with my son, but I will wait until Friday morning to decide. I'm still not sure where to go, though. It will most likely be either Blue or Camelback. It looks like no snow making after tonight, until Friday night. If condition don't look good. Then it will be dinner and a movie with my son, since my daughter and wife are ditching us.

Looks like Marjies, Cleo/Marc Antony to Honeymoon, Sunbowl and a run down the Terrain Park for Camelback this weekend. I will be there Fri, Sat and Sun but don't expect them to be long days. Son has practice so will probably log some time in the bar. (definately for the Jet game Sunday). They are working on more trails so when the next window (Fri PM ?) opens they will hit it. Maybe Sunday for more terrain.

My son gets out of school just before 3. If I leave then, we should get to Camelback by 5:30. Do you know if they will have bumps?

Not a chance unless Marjies bumps up from traffic. I doubt Blue or Elk will either. They are lucky to even get open. I would doubt that they will be skiing at night either. Blue may have it.
