Well my work has decided it would be fun for me to go to Charlotte for 6 weeks and help out, im single with no ties to kids or anyone up north so i figured why not, its not ski season, plus they are paying for all my meals, so im almost saving money in a weird way than if i was back home. Anyways what is there to do here? Im sure ill play golf once or twice, maybe take a weekend trip to asheville in the mtns, and another one to the outerbanks, have any of you been here? your thoughts ?

I've never really liked Charlotte- I think it grew too fast for its own good. Asheville and Boone are pretty cool for visits, the Outer Banks are great beaches, but a helluva long way away (like, 6+ hours). You can also head to Wilmington (4 hours) and Wrightsville Beach, which is nice. Lots of golf there, too.

Well its ok so far, the accents take some getting used to which im sure mine does as well for them.. The 2.63 i just paid for unleaded 5min over the border in SC worked out nicely.

Definately take a drive upto the mountains of western/northern NC, absolutely gorgeous country up there!

Also, on the golfing side of things, the golf mecca of Myrtle Beach isn't that far of a ride from Charlotte

BTW, if you aren't a NASCAR fan you may be when you leave NC, since it's practically religion there. Just figure out first if your a Dale Earnhart Jr fan or a Jeff Gordon fan either way 50% of the folks there will like you and the other half will question your sexual orientation :)

Well ya the Nascar influence is pretty intense here, like redsox/yankees intense, and they keep asking me how can you not like it, according I to them i have to go get to the track and tailgate from 8am til the race and get soot all over me from the cars and such during the race and ill be into it, ummm im not quite that bored but whatever floats your boat. I have seen alot of lakes, im shocked at the greenery down here, it really does look like home, trees everywhere.

mmmm .. Jeff is married and is a daddy now and Dale is still single and over 30 .. come to think of it has anyone ever seen him at the track with a gf ? Not that there is anything wrong with that ...

The rumors about him and his "female exploits" are quite extensive ;) But, if he did "play for the other team", could you imagine how much psychotherapy would be needed down South, first with Dale Jr. going to Hendrick next year and being Gordon's teammate, and then if the other thing was true, the hard core Southern #8 NASCAR fan would be soo confused! ;)

In all seriousness if you've never been to a race and are a sports fan you really need to goto one. It's so much more than just the race, its the whole environment, from tailgating(you can bring your own beer into the track!) to watching the other fans, to actually seeing how fast the cars go, its really a blast. I'm a season ticket holder up at Loudon, NH and most years actually head down to Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600 Memorial day weekend with friends from college. The New England crowd is a blast, the hardcore Southern crowd is unreal, and someday I need to goto either Darlington, Talladega or Bristol to see the over the top crowd.

Just out of curiosity...did they call it "the war between the states"?

I believe the appropriate names are actually "The War of Northern Aggression" or "The Recent Unpleasantness".

We were never allowed to celebrate July 4th at my great aunt's house (the old family farm), since they couldn't understand why anyone would want to celebrate the fall of Vicksburg (which closed the Mississippi to Southern traffic)

I lived in South Carolina years ago and they had a hard enough time accepting that they had "lost" the war. More than once I was asked, "your not from around here ..are ya?"

True story, I'm in the stands at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the '02 Coca Cola 600. It's pre-race and me and my 5 other college friends are in our seats having some "cold frosty #8" beers and B.S.ing about things. The real nice folks(seriously) in the row infront of us (Mt Airy, NC natives) turn around and start talking to us. After about 2 seconds, the wife of the NC natives goes to asks us "your not from around here are you?" We answer "no"(all of us are NY/New England Residents) and ask her "how'd you know", her answer "y'all talk to fast to be from NC" :)

Here's some ideas............

The place has top notch MTB. In fact check out the western north carolina mt bike association. Give it a google search as their site has a ton of maps and some great riding. Bike rental would be easy etc. Try the Psigah National Forest or the Nantahalla NF which are in Asheville(sp). Both have excellent riding and hiking. Also, since it will be hot, check out Sliding Rock which is in the Pisgah NF. Well worth it.

Well my time in Charlotte is down to 1 more week. it was 106 today without the humidity factored in and 104 tomorrow. No breeze whatsoever to speak of being so far inland. I have enjoyed my time here, i can see why so many people relocate here with the cost of living and booming economy.

I was in Burlington, NC for 5 days about 10 days ago. My oldest son had a national soccer tournament down there for 4 days.

I couldn't live there. It was like living in an oven must be like. I was drenched with sweat, my clothes soaked just from sitting watching a 1 hour soccer game.

Ridiculous.

I was in Concord, NC on Thursday of last week, my niece just moved there. It was hotter than heck! It was 106 in the shade and 111 in the sun at her house. Fortunately, she has central air. One thing I did notice, my allergies were so much better there, I did not take my medicine once during the two weeks I spent in Virginia and the day visit to North Carolina. I did go by a couple of the ski areas in Virginia but did not have my camera. They look neat...small, but neat. IF I visit in the winter I will have to try them out.
