In pursuit of knocking off as many New England Ski Areas as I can in one lifetime, I began researching community ski areas. I was surprised to find far more areas still in operation than I ever imagined. I googled upon George's Wood's quest to ski 50 areas in one winter.

I am blown away by how many small community areas there still are. I guess I was "misled" by NELSAP, drawing an incorrect assumption that most were gone. I was just planning how to knock off Suicide, Skiway and Whaleback in one day. These places are BIG compared to most of the community areas. It seems like it could be a lot of fun. It's just really hard when the big boys beckon me on a powder day.

It is pretty wild when you realize how many are still in operation, and how some may come back from the dead. The small area in Campton, NH may operate this season, maybe 200' vertical and double chair. In the next town from me there's the Kancamagus Recreation Area that has a slope, trail and a very fast rope tow. The place is great for families and those wanting a great wok out for legs and arms.

The Kanc Rec also has a adult ski night on Tuesdays for $7(?). I think they also serve a home cooked meal in the "lodge". If you crave something fancier to eat the Common Man is around the corner.

Western Mass has a bunch of little areas. Blandford and Otis ridge are doable in 1 day. Blandford doesn't open until after school so you could do a morning in Otis, afternoon at Blandford.

Back in the late-80's and early-90's I wrote a weekly ski column for Gannett News Service and, for a feature column, skied every area in PA in one month...logistically tough because so many were only open Friday night through Sunday afternoon. I actually missed one, which is still operating and inside the gated community where I now live. I'd never heard of it because they (we) don't allow anyone but members and their guests. The Hideout Ski Hill is a tiny 110 vert, but great for grass skiing and hiking for turns after the regular season ends.

I've had two home hills (Belle and Mt. Tom) become part of NELSAP...it's like a death in the family.

I wouldn't say you where mislead. Most of them ARE closed. Did you mean, you where mislead in that you thought NONE of them existed anymore?

Just found out there used to be a small hill at the golf course I live next to. Hole 4 apparently had a rope tow.

As soon as theres enough snow down here me and the lady are planning on building a kicker and sessioning it. I'll take pics. Planning on hitting a few of the Eastern MA NELSAP areas this winter too....I'll def bring a camera, hoping for a nice new one for x-mas.
