This season is gonna sting for guys like you, Dave. No doubt. I plan to stay local, unless conditions truly warrant a trip north.

Ouch.

Assuming gas prices don't change much, for my round trip to Sunday River is about $70 (a little more than 1 tank of gas).

Since I generally don't have to pay for lodging (Buddy has a condo), I'll eat the cost of gas and drive up with him. I'll probably stick to making it a two or three day trip at a time.

I wish.....
there were nonstop ski trains that left metro areas, and at the station EVERY resort had a bus waiting for you. AM and PM, 7 days a week.
boy, I'm a dreamer....

WHAT is your MPG?
Over what period/distances are you talking about?

Some people have summer cars, you need a winter car. A 4xSnowtire, hi-mpg transport would be just what the doctor ordered. 30mpg@600miles@4bucks/gal ~$80. And I'm being conservative. Can't help you with the boat.....

Looks like I opened myself up for some bashing..;-)

Land Rover Discovery. Gets about 12 to 15 MPG. Trip is around 700 miles if I drive around.

Don't think any of those cars would help me with two kids and two 85lb dogs.

Did not say I can't afford it...Just posting a fact.

180 miles each way. $72 in gas 4 in tolls. Prob $20 more than last year. 4 in the car and a dog. Around 20 to 22 mpg depending on traffic and weather.

Not much one can do about gas, take less trips, shorter trips, stay longer or get a vehicle with better mileage, bus trips etc. The extra amount in gas cost is easily offset by brownbagging a lunch or 2, imo. I was noodling with some numbers to figure out if getting a better mileage vehicle than my Pilot makes any sense. It doesn't, for the amount of miles I put on it per year. Saving 250/yr in better fuel efficiency hardly outweighs the cost and depreciation of a new vehicle. Pilot's paid off, so I wanna enjoy no car payments for a while. Which reminds me, I should look into purchasing an extended warranty.

2 dogs? Dump one and put the other on a diet 8)
You could then afford doggie prison and get by with much less cargo.
why do you bring them? do they board? ;) Skiing equipment is hassle enough, I'd never think about bringing a pet.

Bringing the canine was never an option in my house.
My family of five got by just fine with a Toyota Avalon, 25mpg on our ski trips. You just have to get it in their heads that they are not entitled to bring a roomful of crap with them. If they do, it goes on their laps.8) They learn fast to do without...
My objective is to do my part to reduce our national bloody dependence on the Saudi Arabia fat cats and oil speculators. Didn't say I couldn't afford it either, I just don't like being victimized.

33 mpg Mazda 6 helps out. Big time.

Looking at about $40 round-trip to Wildcat, $50 for River, and between $50-60 for Bush/Stowe. That's at $4/gallon, which hopefully will be a thing of the past come Nov.

The dogs love it up there and to board them runs around $40 a day so it pays to bring them.
I could get a SUV that get better MPG but mine is paid off and does not leave the garage during the week, so it really only cost me on trips.

Gas prices are about $1 higher per gallon right now compared to last season's average. Compared to the total price of a round trip (especially for those of you that do over nights), how much of a gas price increase, specifically as a percentage of your total trip costs, is the current increase in gas prices going to cost? It certainly does add up, but as a percentage of the total cost? Day trippers will see that percentage rise a lot more but if I was doing a two night two day trip, especially with a family or small group, an extra $10-20 in gas for the average ski commute doesn't seem like too much. Or at least enough to merit a substantial altering of typical skiing patterns. I think everyone will be re-evaluating on days that are sub-par. Even I plan on re-evaluating many days for frozen hard pack. But if its good conditions, I am there no matter what gas costs. You can see my season cost calculator for what I spent round trip on gas. When adding up 52 days total, it wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny.
