Resort or Ski Area: Crotched

Conditions: Packed Powder/Frozen Granular

Trip Report:
Great day at this small-mid sized hill. Pulled into the parking lot at 8:35 AM and made first chair at 9:00. Trails were groomed nicely at the beginning of the day, but got skied off somewhat by the time I left around 3:30, but still very ski-able. There was a real nice bump on the right side of the Moon Walk trail where it intersects with Pluto's Plunge. I'm only an intermediate skier and don't do bumps/jumps etc, but it was fun to watch others do it. I normally only ski greens and blues, but tried 2 of the black diamonds at Crotched today - Pluto's Plunge and UFO-Eclipse. I managed both runs quite well; maybe they'd only be a difficult blue at other areas?

Ski patrol set up slalom poles/gates on Pluto's Plunge from about 10:00-12:00, and then on Meteor around 2:00.

My favorite trails of the day were Meteor and Velocity, both right at my ability level. I find it interesting that all of the trail names at Crotched have an outer space theme to them. I wonder what the history is behind that.

Was too afraid to ask the locals/staff about the pronunciation of Crotched - is it 1 syllable (rhymes with botched) or 2 syllables (where the "e" is pronounced.)

It's my goal to try every ski area at least once within 3-4 hours of home for a day trip. I can now check Crotched off my list. At just under 3 hours each way, I felt it well worth it.

Here are a few pics (don't really add much to the TR, but I'll post anyway)

Parking Lot at 11:30. Pretty much stayed this empty up until about 2:15, when the kids got out of school. By 3:00, the main lot was completely full, and the next lot to the right of the double-chair was filling up quickly.

Liftside Parking. The main parking lot stretches the entire base of the mountain, and is only a few rows deep. Get there early, and you're less than a 50-foot walk to the snow. Meteor is on the left and Pluto's Plunge is on the right

View from the summit. I thought I read somewhere that you could see Sunapee from the top of Crotched, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe I have one of the mountains confused. But then again, I didn't really know which direction to look.

Thanks for the report. Got a night pass to the mighty Crotch (I think it's 2 syllables?), but haven't been yet this season.

Crotched was my mountain when I was about 12-14 (late 70s/early 80s), my sis was a ski instructor and my family got free or cheap passes. The trail names are all new - after they shut down for some time, they came back with new names. I have tons of memories of the place, but looking at a map it looks so different now. The black diamond trail down the front was called Blitz back then (the toughest trail), remember another called Double Dipper. Also remember huge long lines for the chair and T-bar, 30-45 mins was the norm...and the T-bar up was gnarly rutted ride up - if you fell off, had to climb up, or down and wait in line all over again.. They'd also have a great oompah type of norweigen band in the lodge every weekend. Sorry for the trip down memory lane...makes me appreciate HSQ and modern lifts lol.

Very glad to see it came back to life.

I never skied at the old Crotched but the new Crotched is actually the old Bobcat...does that make sense!

see http://www.nelsap.org/nh/crotched.html

for a complete explanation!

It's a great mountain for novice/lower intermediates and families.

Your talking about the old Crotched East which is what I used to ski in college.(same time frame you were there) The current Crotched sits on the old Crotched West (or Onset, or Bobcat). There was a power line on that mountain that always looked interesting to ski but I never did it. Sled may have.

I learned to ski ice night-skiing at the Crotch back in the east/west days, late 80's I think.

Ahh..yes, that makes sense, the map seemed completely different. I think I remember you could travel between the 2 with a connector trail, but we never used to.

We used to beer league race on Crotch East in the early 80's. Spent more time drinking than racing ( nights). Sounds like today's Pats team! :-D It was too dam cold to stay out in the dark. I'll bet Riverc0il was on the green slopes when we were making utter fools of ourselves on the gates. We sure told good lies about our runs though! ;-)
