Resort or Ski Area: Crotched Mountain

Conditions: Variable snow, very nice weather - sunny and calm. High temps were probably in the low 30s.

Trip Report: Arrived shortly after opening and snow guns were blazing. Conditions were interesting for this intermediate. First run was down Meteor (I think) - a blue off the summit quad; snow was a mix of firm but edgeable and machine made heavy powder. Then we took a run down the black from the summit to the blue with the terrain park; snow on the black was soft and freshly blown, snow in the terrain park was packed and edgeable. Did a run down Big Dipper, lots of death cookies but relatively easy to ski. Pluto's Plunge was interesting, kind of the trail I wanted to love, but... Had really nice snow in places but I hit a big ice patch on skiers left/middle left. It was pretty much ice, not just the usual everyday scraped off spots. I'm a mediocre skier but really couldn't get any edge in it. Once by the ice patch it was very nice. As the day wore on things became more and more scraped up. Given the week's weather, I suspect conditions at Crotched were as good or better than any other area within driving distance. It good to get out but we need snow!

Wow. I've seen the word "ice" mentioned in this Crotched report more often than all other reports combined. That's unusual. I'm sure they are making snow tonight.
