I bet if they were only opened to 10 then complaints would be less. I am not saying someone still wouldn't complain but it may be less. I read the comments from the person who moved away from Pats peak because of the lights. I bet they moved in well after night skiing started at Pats. It is kind of like moving in next to a pig farm then trying to close it down because it stinks.

From Crotched's Facebook page:

Save Midnight Madness! The upcoming 2013-2014 winter season will be a remarkable achievement for Crotched Mountain and all who have supported our underlying commitment to providing the community with exceptional alpine recreational services. Unfortunately, as we should begin celebrating our tenth successful winter season together, Crotched Mountain and our supportive community is facing a possible cease-and-desist order for New England’s only late night skiing and riding sess...ion, Midnight Madness.

The mountain’s nighttime lighting {complying with national standards for ski areas} has become a “light pollution” issue for the Planning Board of Francestown and a select few individuals in the area. While we are sympathetic to those who are frustrated with light pollution in our region, it’s imperative to understand without Midnight Madness and ski area nighttime lighting Crotched Mountain would not be a viable business for our community. Our family values and unwavering commitment to providing guests with pristine snow conditions and services like Midnight Madness has put Crotched Mountain on the map for good in a extremely competitive industry.

Crotched Mountain and our supportive community is taking every action to preserve the convenience and safety of nighttime skiing and snowboarding here at Crotched Mountain, and would like to thank the overwhelming support we have received thus far. To continue the quest to keep nighttime skiing and snowboarding at Crotched Mountain {if available} please show your support during the next town meeting:

UPCOMING TOWN MEETING (open to public)
When: Thursday, September 12, 2013 (7:00PM)
Where: Francestown Town Office, 27 Main Street (red building)

The mountain is saying that if they have to add blinds, they would have to increase the number of lights to provide safe skiing, and more lights with blinds would create about the same level of "light polution" as the current setup does.

Crotched has been doing Midnight Madness for a while now! I have not been there night skiing for a couple of years now but are the lights that much brighter then they were before? I have always wanted to do Midnight Madness - skiing until 3 AM.

I bet the complaints are from non skiers or ski haters!

Good luck Crotched!

When they put in the high speed quad last year, they extended it to the top of the ridge so the lights are now visible from the south, east and west. Previously, the top was below the ridge line, so the lights were mainly visible from the north.

I love the comment about Pats Peak. I don't think that the drunk drivers are from Pats...Henniker has a college and at least one other restaurant that I recall.

I do alot of night skiing, and live within 5 miles of a pretty big night skiing mtn. The only way that a person would even notice the lights are if they are out on there deck enjoying the evening. But who does that in the winter?
I fail to see the problem with the night skiing.

Lots of Massachusetts people moved up here to get away from everything but then wanted all the comforts of home where they have association rules and such. This is the live free or die state get used to it.

Anyone ever ski there after 11 at night to experience what Crotched's Midnight Madness skiing is all about? I'm just curious how busy it is that late at night. I love skiing as much as the next guy, but I don't think I've had a desire to ski after 10PM since High School. I rarely have enjoyed night skiing at all outside of chance powder events in my life. Usually too damn cold and the snow surface scratched down to nothing.

They usually re-groom the major runs at 9-10pm. Attendance jumps up from 9pm-1am then drops off. Only a few diehards at 3am.
The only lift line that I've seen was the night after "nemo" and even then it was short. Some nights can be a little nippy, others are primo. Depends upon the weather. Can be a real party attitude, especially after midnight. Bottom line, where else can you ride after 10pm in the east? Crotched!

As DH said why would you want to ski after 10pm?

As a parent of a teenager, I would feel great comfort that they would be on the slopes or in the lodge during those hours of the night

I can definitely see the appeal for parents to have a healthy late night outlet for their kids. I just know when I was a teenager in VT, my driver's license until I was 18 had a curfew of midnight and my folks certainly wouldn't have been down with picking me up from skiing between midnight and 3AM. I would've been told to go screw and be home by midnight.

Mind you, I'm not arguing in support of the people who wish to see the operation hours reduced. It just seems puzzling to have a night skiing operation run past midnight unless it's extremely close to a major population center. I don't consider Manchester to be such. Then again, I'm not privy to the financials at Crotched and able to see their value in the business decision.
