Resort or Ski Area: Crystal Mountain

Conditions: no powder, just about everything else, blue bird day. high 30s

Trip Report: that was a humbling experience :-o

Arrived to what looked like a crowded parking lot. Booted up and was on the snow about 9:45. Bright sunny day and i was expecting to warm up so i figured the first hour or so would be crispy snow and it was. Unfortunately even though the sun was out all day the upper mountain never really thawed out.

Upper and Lower mountain are very different, at least from what i could tell. Lower mountain is a snooze but you can ride the upper lifts all day and get to some really cool terrain. Highlights of the day were Campbell Basin, a bowl to the far looker's left of High Campbell double chair. You have to traverse out (some folks hike up further) but it is worth it. I guess it doesn't get much sun as the snow was pretty soft. There was another bowl, Powder Bowl, off the same chair but to the right that was fun too. Another great area was Northway. There were a few good bowls over there and i found some bumps too.

There were some really awesome looking runs down the face that turned out to be too much for me. They were baking in the sun so i figured/hoped they were soft but not so. crusty corn bumps that never got soft on a steep pitch left me beat up. there was plenty of sick terrain that i only looked at

The mountain held the crowds well. Other than my first ride up from the base most lifts were ski on or just a few minutes wait. The old double that takes you up to some good stuff had a ski patroller warning people before they got on the lift that there was no easy way down.. for some reason i got warned every time while other skied past.. guess i didn't have the "look" :)

no seeded bumps to be found :-(

i'll post some pics shortly.

i think this is "bruce's bowl" in the northway area, again soft snow and a lot of fun.

Crystal Mtn. is in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State.
about 2 hours from where i was in Bellevue. A very cool ride the last 30 miles through the forest.

Gary: Looks great. Did you get a chance to demo a pair of Afterburners out there?

i went back and forth on demoing skis for the trip. i ended up dragging my volks out with me. I'm hitting demo day @ Okemo on 3/14, planning on the AB demo that day with an immediate purchase if i like them.

Cool trip Gary. Looks like some fun terrain, even if the snow wasn't great.

Nice! I've yet to go to Crystal but I'm hopefully heading there tomorrow, was just at Alpental today... winter arrived again yesterday and today... was skiing some shin deep Cascade Concrete today. Crystal got 9" in the last 48hrs and Alpental ranged from 4-12!... it was sorely needed!

Man, was just there today... the place is impressive and there is some sick natural terrain. Spent most of the day in the Campbell Basin with one run down Powder Bowl (fun!). Did a couple nice steep chutes off of the Throne but should've really just sucked it up and hiked the rest of the way up the Silver King (lots of free lines still there). Sunnyside and that whole side of the mountain wasn't too much fun - it was a gorgeous sunny day and the shin/knee deep snow that was now tracked out was really heavy on that aspect... so not too much fun.... actually most of the easily accessible inbounds was all tracked out, so not too much fun at times.
Anyway, awesome mountain... just gotta head in there on a powder day now.
