perhaps bandwagon is the wrong word. i don't watch baseball but i do study baseball fans, whose attitudes are one of many reasons i no longer watch the game. damon was god to so many people i know back when he was a sox.

That's the nature of sports though. When a player is on your team and they help you then you love them. Fans are devoted to specific teams for the most part, so when that player gets traded you will usually care less about them (ie Pedro, Millar). However, when that player gets traded to your archrival, then you develop a hatred for that player by association. Same reason that everyone hates Jeter, ARod, et al. - they wear pinstripes.

i know how it works skibum. look at the rocket. when clemens got traded to the jays in the "twilight of his career," people question the management and wish the man well. but when said player then signs with the yanks and comes to boston, it is all about "roooooooooooger, roooooooooger" chants. i don't mind rassing opposing players. as a hockey fans, i have made many a heckle. but i heckle indiscrimently based on whos a goon, not based on past employment. i just miss the old days when players stayed on one team for ohhh, longer than two or three season before being traded away to the highest bidder. i long for the days of complete game pitchers and team career players. but what made me turn away from the sport ultimately, was the ugliness, and it is mostly coming from the fans. my favorite is the "yankees suck" chant. i never was a yankees fan, always a bean town supporter when i was a baseball fan. but saying the best francise in baseball history sucks is at best idiotic. it also doesn't say much for your own team when your best cheer/chant is a put down against the best franchise in baseball and not props to your own team. so much ugliness, which is the spirit of my original post in this thread in reference to the damon bib. but i digress :)

But the D-Rays will have to pay Kazmir big $$$ when his contract is up & they won't do that.

Not sure when his contract is up but they will trade him (if not 06 then in 07 or 08) while they can get 2 or 3 young prospects that might develop into good players & can be signed cheap. Once he is a free agent, only big teams will be able to afford his contract.

Kazmir is not eligible for arbitration until 2008 and will not be a free agent until 2011. The D-Rays were smart and locked him up while he was cheap.

I agree with you about a lot of that, River. I too miss the days when players would stay with a team for their careers. Greed has just overtaken the sport where they are willing to leave for more money. When it comes down to $10 million a season or $12 million a season does it really matter? I love the players, while they are here, but above all my loyalty is to the Sox as a whole, not the individual pieces.

That was not only because he was a Yankee. Sox fans were plenty unfriendly with him when he was with the Jays too, becaues he became fat, lazy, and lethargic with the Sox. As soon as he was shipped out he got his second wind and started pushing his ERA south of 4 once again. Sox fans felt betrayed (and rightfully so).

Becoming a Yankee was just grinding salt into the wound.

Another point, the Rocket was demanding top pay after several lackluster seasons. Given all baseball contract are guaranteed, Red Sox management may have felt this was risky was not sure he was worth his demands. I would say most die-hard fans did agree and felt they were ripped off when the Rocket used this as motivation to revitalize his career. He got into better shape and had more zip in his throws but you have to wonder where was this motivation when he was under contract for the sox?

Totally agree...I can't bring my boys to see a Yankee game because the stands are filled with drunk, combative, verbally abusive idiots. The "Yankees suck" chant is nothing compared to what you hear at the Stadium. And I don't want my boys to think it's OK to throw things like beer bottles and rolls of quarters at players either.

For some reason, sports fans think it's OK to do these things. And I don't think they do alot of that stuff in the real world because if they did they would be beaten or arrested.

Jim, I disagree with that statement. You may have seen that in the bleachers before they banned alcohol, but in these days things are much different. I wouldn't bring them to a $5 day though. How many boys do you have? If I get ahold of my neighbor's company seats one day, you come and meet me and we'll do it right.

wow, a stadium banned alcohol in the bleachers!?!!? what an amazing lose in profit margin, things must have been very bad indeed.

I couldn't begin to tell you, Steve. It was a black eye on Yankee stadium. Many a time, I had felt uncomfortable sitting there. Of course, now I can't have a beer there so I don't sit there...unless it's a playoff game.

Well, you're right...I haven't been to the stadium in about 8 years. I brought my son David there when he was 4 years old (Peter was only 2 and wouldn't have even understood what was going on) and he came home with a few new vocabulary terms. My wife was less than thrilled.

I have 3 boys...the youngest (James) is 4 but I think he would want to come along with his 2 older brothers. David and Peter would love it! So would I.

The "bleacher creatures" were the worst...I remember sitting there with 2 buddies about 10 years ago and it was total chaos. Part of it was funny, but alot was almost scary. The cursing and obscene chants were kind of funny, the fistfights and property destruction were not. One guy personally destroyed an entire row of seats.
