Very very cool! Thanks for posting! The detachable units are certain more complex than a fixed grip unit.

In this pic here...is that a radiator/cooler? Almost looks like it has hydraulic lines running to it?

I can't tell for sure because it's cut off, but it appears to be part of the hydraulic tensioning system, something I didn't mention because it's not specific to detachables. Maybe a fluid cooler? Not sure.

you have 3 phase electric service at your home?

You can use a phase converter...probably a couple hundred bucks to buy one.

@BMM, thanks for the pics and description, I'd always wondered what the inside looked like.

A big lift like this is putting out about 900hp. The range for detachables is usually abou 500-1500hp.

Torque varies widely from lift to lift, depending on tons of factors.

how many amps does that draw @480v? do the lifts have back-up power systems?

So from this, we have the answer:
Given 500hp, 480V, and 95% efficiency, it'll draw 820A.

So up to 2450A for a 1500hp system.

And in case anyone was wondering, lumped resistances of 0.59 ohms and 0.195 ohms, respectively.

(assuming I remember basic circuits correctly and have done the math right.)

Snowmaking takes the cake there. Makes lifts look insignificant.

You start talking about banks of 4160V centrifugal compressors up to 150-2000hp and banks of 480v pumps at 250-1000hp, that's electricity consumption!

Yeah, that's what I mean. I few months ago, I got a tour of the power systems that will be installed at the new World Trade Center. Now that was some amazing shit!

It was way beyond my level of comprehension. Fully redundant systems. I wasn't able to get that close, but close enough to see banks of 6000A fuses and a bunch of engineers from the PA and Siemens and some other people who wouldn't talk to us. They have most of the system built and will air lift it over when it's ready.

I know from a thread conversation with Mount Snow's Mountain Ops head, that last year, BEFORE the extra 150 fan guns went in, when they were making snow at/near max capacity that there electric bill was in the neighborhood of $10,000 and hour :eek:

That's amazing. Certainly something to consider when you pay for a lift ticket.

It's mind blowing when you think of how much even a small area spends on utilities alone. I'm amazed that any of them can operate in the black, let alone make any sort of profit..

Especially when you factor in the cost of utilities rising over the past few years.
