Does Stratton really have good tree stashes?

I was told by a friend's relative who owns a slopeside home at Stratton that there are tree stashes that only real good skiers and regulars know about and that they are well maintained. Can any of you that ski that mountain regularly confirm this? I don't want you to tell me where they are. I just want to know if this guy is right.

Yes, yes they do have some nice stashes. Didn't get there this past year, but had some fun in the woods/unmarked trails last time there.

I remember taking some unmarked trail at Stratton all the way down to this maintenance building. The snow became very sketchy until there was none at all and I knew I was off course some how. I still to this day couldn't figure out how we made it down there. One of the maintenenace guys had to drive us back up to the village in a bus.

When I was a kid skiing Stratton every weekend back when it was double chairs and no snowmaking, the place was loaded with easy tree skiing. I'll bet that as they chainsawed a lot of 'supertrails', a bunch of that got destroyed. I remember when that whole face where Slalom Glade is now used to be open tree skiing.

Nah, there's no tree skiing at stratton, only 6-packs and groooomers. They don't get any snow either.

When I was at stratton I skied marked glades but on some of the cat tracks on the side of the trails there were definitely tracks going into the woods.

Yes they do! That's my favorite part of skiing Stratton. I always find a new one every time I go. They have some single track stuff that can get very hairy. This pic was from inside Diamond in the Rough last season. Great snow in there!

There are some fun stashes on both sides of Black Bear. Other than that, I didn't come accross any off map stashes elsewhere with the exception of some very short stashes.

Although Stratton does have their six packs and groomers, they also have great tree terrain. Perhaps groomed terrain is what you want, but if you want trees and powder stashes, it is out there. Try Shredwood Forest, Diamond in teh Rough and Test Pilot if you like tree terrain.

Test Pilot is the single-track stuff to skiers right of Upper and Lower Kidderbrook. Dancing Bear and Free Fall Gully are nice pitches and even Cabin Fever is fun.

Most of Stratton is actually skiable, especially in a good snow year when the brush gets covered up. Lots of somewhat open natural glades with deciduous trees that rarely get skied. Their elevation helps them get a good amount of snow, and they don't have as much wind as the northern resorts. I had a pass there a while back and hit some good powder days. Fewer tree skiers there than the northern resorts....the glades on the map get tracked out, but the natural ones don't even get skied, holding fresh for days after a storm. It's a great place to go with a pair of very short and fat powder skis. Compare that with somewhere like Stowe or Jay, where every inch of the mountain gets skied pretty quickly.

I came across this nice little drop in the woods there

trees_drop.jpg

Conditions the one day I went in April went from frozen slush to slush, with most of the woods I found moguled up. But did seem there were lots of tree runs available.

If I'm not mistaking, I believe highway star was being facetious. :)
