Fly from NY to Carrabassett Valley International.

Why not drive directly from NY to the Loaf. Leave Ty home or bring her along. You know how to get to Portland, I usually take Rt I 295 to Disgusta, then go up I 95 to Waterville and go through Norridgewock, Madison and on to Kingfield. 1 hour to the loaf from I 95 on decent roads, the rest is 4 lane or more.

Leave Ty home

Almost wet my pants on that one... LOL

For various reasons, some of which are the fact that its pretty difficult to find lodging this late on a holiday weekend, I'm the only one going (along with Iceman)

Any tips? Suggestions?

Doing it early Sat morning, hope to arrive at Loaf at around 7:30 AM

Be careful. If you can leave at a decent time on Friday I would. Watch the weather too. It may snow at elevation Friday night. The forecast has been all over the place on the next system.

Call my office anytime there is snow anywhere in New England greater than 9 inches. I have a double digit snow rule. If it happens I'm there for it. Life is way too short to sit any footers out. I love the drive to the snow.

If you take Rt 4 E to I 89 S to I 93 S to NH Rt 101 E to I 95 N to I 295 N to I 95 N to Waterville it should take you 5:30 max. All good roads with plenty of places to stop along the interstates. Only 1 hour or so once you get off in Waterville for the 2 lanes. I am 2 hrs 10 minutes to Killington and 3 Hours 5 minutes to the Loaf.

This is what I had originally thought would be the safest bet and the clearest path. There is no pretty way to slice this drive.

You going to drive back at the end of the day?

I called in "sick" half way down the mountain at Sugarloaf last year. It dawned on me that if I skied till close, I'd be getting home at two in the morning. I thought about doing a half day the next day, but I didn't. It would have been later than two, I had to stop and take a nap about an hour from home. I think I rolled in at dawn. The conversation with my boss went like this, boss, "Where are you?" me, "In Maine", boss, "Are you hiking?", me, "No, skiing.", boss, "Skiing? There's still snow there?" me, "Hell yeah, I just skied the backside." It was May 2nd. Don't think that's going to happen this year.

That is one heck of a drive Corny. I can't take long drives anymore. 4 hours is my limit.

Thats awesome. Hiking in May after the mountain closes is when the real mountain partying begins. If youre up again and the snow is good pm me. I'll tour you.

This sounds good. One question: You meant Sugarloaf, not Waterville right?

edit: I see what you mean about Waterville - Waterville ME. OK.

Gmaps says 6:12 for that route, but I imagine I could do some serious speed on most of that route, especially the time I'm travelling so I should be good. I guess I'll shoot for a 1 AM departure.

Get off of I 95 in the City of Waterville, ME. Rt 104, Exit 130 to Norridgewock. I think there is a Home Depot to the right as you drive down the ramp.104 becomes 139 to Norridgewock. In Norridgewock take a right at the light and go across the new bridge, this is Rt 201A. Follow 201a thru Madison, go by Madison Paper, which is owned by the New York Times, bearing right after you go over the bridge to RT 16, which will be a left in North Anson after you go over another bridge. Follow Rt 16 into Kingfield. After you cross the bridge, take a right onto Rt 27 N. Follow to the access road on the left if you are staying on the mnt.

I was warned about the moose already by CVA students at Stratton... I'm figuring on leaving K around 1:30 or 2 AM, the CVA crew said about 5-1/2 hours. They do this sort of thing a lot, I feel for them.

Google maps has: 4 -> I-89 -> I-91 -> I-93 -> 2 -> 102 -> 3 -> 110 -> 16 -> Carrabassett Rd

But you folks are saying that will have too many heaves?

OK I'll take the suggested route above. Thanks for the tips.
Yes, don't follow the first google map suggestion. It is technically the fastest if you can travel the speed limit but you're car won't survive Route 16 to Erol and Rangely. Also, WAY WAY WAY more moose that way. Route 2 from StJ to NH is crawling with moose and 16 around Erol and Rangely is another moose alley. Route 2 from Jefferson to Framington is a much better option. Use the second google maps option which is what I posted above.

I take it moose are attracted to the salt, no? That's the route I've been taking, just tack on four hours to get to Killington for me. It takes me about nine hours to get to the Loaf. That's why I wait till everything else is closed in the Spring, and I can't take the jones any longer. The only time I've seen a moose is while traveling back from Sugarloaf. They are huge, and their bodies are just at the wrong height, windshield, for human carnage via collision. See Mythbusters.

Yup Moose, Dear and Rednecks spaced out on meth like the road salt. When Squaw Mt was still open the highlite of the day (other then riding Squaw) was to pass by the DOT garage w/outdoor salt storage, sometimes you would see 10 of them at once. As to the size of the moose, I find that Maine has the biggest deer and moose in New England, not sure why. The deer people shoot here in western NH and VT are small for the most part.
