From the Mountain Creek homepage this morning:

Today At Mountain Creek
Snow day!! Yesterday’s snow storm has dumped TONS of fresh powder on the Creek to kick off the weekend!! Tomorrow is the Freeski superfling which Freeski magazine notes as “an event not to be missed.” Plus, the Girls Learn to Ride clinic will also be going on for our girls of all age and ability levels looking to land a great lesson! Check out www.mountaincreek.com for all the details!

.....TONS of fresh powder? We were lucky to get 2-3" although I guess that COULD be construed as tons here in NJ!!!!!

fwiw, the resorts up here do the same thing for only slightly larger storms claiming powder days for 4" or so. then they go and groom it all cause most skiers really don't want to ski on untracked powder, but they like the thought of going skiing after fresh snow fall. this season i think 2-3" could be construed as tons up here too! here's hoping for a couple of tons over the next two days ;)

Well, the term "powder" is very subjective. Powder at Wachusett is different than powder at Jay. The main thrust of this line to me was, "we've gotten some snow, come skiing this weekend." A lot of places advertise how much snow they've gotten in the last 10 days in order to try and entice people to come. So, I think it is fine, but we're educated skiers/riders.

In a related subject, how many resorts do you think are utilizing the late October dump in their year to date snow totals even though a) they never opened and b) the snow was wiped away by rain and warmth before they even started thinking of making snow or getting ops running. nit-picky but those inches or feet should be excluded except at Wildcat or wherever else they opened.

All of them...the ones that got snow in October anyway.

And about the tons of snow thing, they'll tell you that if you took the 3-6" layer that fell across the entire resort and put it in a big pile and weighed it, it would weigh tons.

Ski resort snow reporting belongs in a big pile for the most part.

Sounds like the storm hit here a lot harder. 8'' of pure fluffy white stuff. No ice at all. More is on the way. It's been adding to the 8'' all day, i would say we're up to 10 now.

i started a thread along these lines in november. because wildcat did include those totals and that is okay. jay also included those totals despite not being open. but cannon and a lot of other ski areas did not.

Cannon had some of the best skiing from that October dump.
yea, that october storm was friggin sweet. november wasn't too bad for cannon either. despite the excellent snow they received this weekend, i gotta admit i had better turns in october and november.
