This moves me incrimentally closer to deactivating my FaceSpace YouBook thing.
The risk/reward equation just doesn't work- absolute zero reward is not worth even a tiny amount of risk.

At the moment, you have to "check in"somehow, adn it's only on iPhones (another strike against them, too). Your Friends can check you in, too, I think. And how long before it just automatically accesses your GPS and broadcasts your location to everyone?

Thanks, but no thanks.

I don't understand why anyone would think that's a good idea? If I want people to know where I am I'll tell them.

You can turn it off and block other people from checking you in. No big deal, but the kids like the foursquare stuff so FB needs to keep up.

yeah - just turn it off... I don't know what the big deal is...

I like using Foursquare. I have a limited amount of people I actually let see my posts and i find out about cool things to do and see when I check in..

I really don't get any of the privacy concerns with Facebook. Changes are fairly public, fine grained, and you have control over them. I'm not sure why you'd share any actual information with anyone that wasn't a friend anyways. Facebook isn't invading your privacy, you're giving it up.

Also, no family members or coworkers. Pretty straight-up rule for me.

The places thing seems like a Twitter-like usefulness to me. Only case I could see using it for is Friday/Saturday night, going to this bar with such and such people, stop by if you're around. Other than that type of thing, it'd be planned out in advance anyways or documentation can be done in the standard wall post method.

I don't share anything, or have any worthwhile personal information up, so I'm not necessarily worried about Facebook giving anything away. Hell, you people probably know more about me than could gleaned from my FaceSpace page.

There's just something about all the information sharing that I just don't like. Sure, it's your choice, and it should be. I just find it mildly distressing that so many people make the choice to over share. It's not just that I don't care that you made chocolate chip cookies last night or put your shirt on backwards this morning (I don't, but that's beside the point). It's much more that people feel the need to tell people that kind of thing, and that they think other people care. And even stranger to me, other people do seem to care.

Hey, everybody- I'm breathing in!
Now I'm breathing out!
I blinked!
Now I'm breathing in again!

Awesome!

/snarkiness etc. Grumpy today, for some reason.
//now, get off my lawn.

So - am I supposed to care about your words?

I'm a bit confused.. If you didn't care why would you even respond? Unless you want people to care about what you have to say..

So what you're saying is that you care about people caring about stuff that they shouldn't care about?

I find it offensive that you care about that. You shouldn't care about people caring about stuff they shouldn't care about.

Then again, I only use Facebook for stalking, so I don't particularly notice that type of thing.

It's not offensive, just confusing.
And there's a difference- here it is at least something of a conversation, rather than just sharing for the sake of sharing.

So your saying that people can have a computer conversation here but not on Facebook?

I don't understand - you kinda contradict yourself.

No, I'm saying that facebook doesn't really count as a conversation, and things like Twitter even less so.

Are social network sites evidence of growing levels of voyeurism and exhibitionism (and which feeds which?), or of a massive lack of self esteem and a constant need for affirmation? Or, is it a good thing that actually brings us all closer together, society just has to figure out how it all goes together?

I don't know the answer, and so I don't like it. We fear the unknown.

My point is - it's not so different then here. It ddepends on how you use it... Except here you really can't control who see's your content. Some of the content from AZ goes to Facebook now even. It's all a web...

Your right - We are learning as a society how to deal with this.. I've been on the social media wagon since Usenet and BBS's in the 1980's. Lot's has changed.
Even this board is starting to become "quaint"... :)

I don't disagree with you, really. Especially on the quaint factor- which might be why I'm more comfortable with a forum setting than Facebook- perhaps it's that information here sort of stays here- to get it, you have to come to it, rather than it being pushed out to who knows who.

No - it's being sent to Facebook and Goolge. It's all intertwined now.

Point is on Facebook I can determine who sees what. It's way more secure - you gotta make it that way though.
I have people setup into groups Family, Good friends, etc... I can exclude whom I choose from whatever I do.

Not here..
