Facebook isn't invading your privacy, you're giving it up.
BINGO!!!

People are so critical of FB. Why do they even bother using it? It is like you'd think FB is now included within the Bill of Rights or something. Privacy concerns? You're using a free service, for crying out loud. Stop using it if it bothers you so much.

The only reason I ever opened a FB account was because all my friends jumped off LJ and onto FB. Sucks. I don't like FB but use it reluctantly because everyone else is on it. Maybe one day, people will get so sick of these issues that people will actually do something more than complain about it... like stop using FB. I can't wait for that day.

I can appreciate where Cten is coming from. Not many people (except BB) repeatedly post boring mundane everyday unimportant trivial happenings on AZ. Not like most do on FB. Cten does not see the value in that and neither do I. And it is the same but still very different than posts on AZ (for the most part).

We could open up a philosophical can of worms and definitions here and boil things down to basics and whatever but I think everyone here can perceive the differences between FB and a forum like AZ without having to split hairs.

I think everyone here can perceive the similarities between AZ and FB as well.

Ultimately it's about putting content on the net... Weather it's trip reports or the what are you eating thread... :) It's all out there..

The big value of FB to me is promotion. I can promote my bands and myself. i do dream of quitting my job and becoming a fulltime musician.
And I connect with people I meet along the way.. I'm meeting up with some musician friends tonight because I posted a concert in Woodstock(George Porter)..

If you have nothing to promote maybe it's useless..

Most I think is pretty strong. I've got about 90 friends on FB at this point. I'd say about 10% post on a daily basis, 10% every other day, maybe 50% post every other week or so. Maybe a third of the posts are pictures. There's maybe 2 people I know that come close to the stream of conciousness meme (and one that has a stream of urine into a urinal theme, but that's Russians for ya,) and 2 or 3 more that just use it as a venting channel. That I do get, every once in a while I get the urge myself (but haven't yet.) Signal to noise may be low, but "most do on FB" seems a bit off the mark, and something I don't get.

Other use is if you've moved around a bit in your life. I've got high school friends centered in WNY (and elsewhere,) college friends that have pretty much scattered over the U.S. (and Australia) given that you don't go to Clarkson if you have strong ties to home, friends from various stuff in CT, and skiing friends from Killington. Might go skiing out west next year with a college friend that lives in Vegas. MTB over the summer in CT with friends from Killington. Meet up with high school friends when I visit my family. Sharing pictures/videos. That's where it comes in handy for me, not the "Hey, everybody else cares so much about what I'm doing."

Oh, and stalking. Can't forget about stalking.

So what you are saying is that it is time for me to remove some users from my feed.

Indeed, signal to noise ratio is very much noise from what I see. One of my big issues with FB is the lack of depth. That you need to click to see more after only three sentences creates a lack of communication. They don't call them "status updates" for no reason. FB was not designed for high levels of communication. I just see that as a failing. It operates as designed and it is designed to encourage folks to post quick bits. I get the most out of FB as an aggregator for interesting videos, links, pictures, etc. Sometimes folks post stuff that they are doing that is actually interesting. Most just quip about the daily whatever. So if that is not the case for you (i.e. "most") then perhaps it is a matter of selection and it is time to weed.

You can turn it off and block other people from checking you in. No big deal, but the kids like the foursquare stuff so FB needs to keep up.

wa-loaf has it right...

I think Facebook does a good job of keeping up with the trends like foursquare, that many are interested in, while still offering privacy settings that make it easy to be as public or private as you want to be.

The key is that you need to take on the responsibility of the information you share.

FWIW I've blocked certain applications like Foursquare on my news feed page because I had several friends who's minute by minute activity was filling the page and I wasn't interested that "steve was entering the building to pick his daughter up from dance class" etc.....
