If you could design your own ski resort including all the trails, lifts, lodges, etc. what would it look like?

My area would be very similar to MRG, in that I would not groom a whole lot. I would have some runs that would have mandatory airs and be all natural and narrow. I would also have a handful of runs where I blow a ton of snow and let them bump up for some great early and late season bumps. I would also have a ton of unmarked bc trails - some tight and narrow - others a little more wide open so that you can just rip down the whole way. I would make one trail that would be groomed for warmup runs (groomers serve no other purpose for me). I would only have a couple of lifts up the mtn to keep very few skiers on the hill and I would limit the number of tix sold per day to keep lines low. There would be only one lodge at the base area.

Having said all this, my ski area would lose tons of money, but it's a fantasy so who cares.

Mine would get Western snow Alta/Snowbird

It would have copies of:

Whiteface - The Slides
Smuggs = Back country
Stowe - Front Four
Sugarbush - Castlerock
Jay - It's glades

Lots of bump runs
$.25 big frosty mugs of beer
served by bikini clad bar maids and waitresses

heard they need more snow though, what about kicking horse with alta like snow?

I though the snow was awesome when I was there.. It didn't snow much but the ridge gets windblown every night that filled in the chutes very nicley...

I like it just the way it is...

oic, thats pretty cool. I was just looking on TR's from places like TGR and taking there word for it. Its probably just like lake louise, you have to know where to go to find good snow. I hated lake louise when i first went but i defiantly want to try it again though.

i think the north side of the presidentials would be awsome, like jefferson, adams, and madison. I know this could never happen because of the wind, but there are some awsome looking bowls up there. Probably only would be good though with mt baker like snowfall

NE face of Madison towards Gorham would be ideal, as long as you kept below treeline. Regardless, skibum, I'm pretty sure you're wrong about it probably losing a lot of money. After all, MRG is one of the few ski areas in the Northeast that consistently makes money on its skiing operations. As long as you avoid the expense of snowmaking (which is HUGE in the East) you are way ahead of the game. It's no coincidence that the small, community/family owned areas that don't make a lot of snow by choice (MRG) or by design (Alta and Wolf Creek) consistently make tidy little profits year after year. At the same time, the larger areas relying on McTrails, snowmaking, and large overheads (they are "mountain resorts" after all) need to make their money in real estate.

Well unlike MRG I had said that I would limit lift tix to very few, which would severely limit revenue. I also would be blowing alot of snow on 4 or 5 trails to have the consistent bump runs that can start early season and end late. So I stand by my statement that it would lose money. It's hard to make money without a lot of skiers.

my ski area would be a lot like skibums, first i would want a mountain with a good sunstained vertical, like wildcat, except about 5-10 degrees steeper than wildcat. Then i would have one lift going to the top. With an awsome top to bottom bump run under the lift. Then i would have 2 groomed trails on the edge of the ski area for warm ups. then the whole middle of the mountain would be gladed with chutes, drop, and river beds. Also probably a few castlerock type runs going through the glades. This is only if it was in the east. If i had big above treeline mountaisn i would want the alta/ snowbird and kicking horse set up. Ridge bowl ridge bowl and so on. I love that set up, just keep traversing til you get to something that looks good :D

ohhh ya almost forget, i would defiantly ban snowboarders, dont want the trails getting icy

Interconnect Stowe and Smuggs via a lift, turn the Madonna lift into a hsq and have altaesque snow totals and that would pretty much do it.

How about somewhere that got fresh snow all year round... but wasn't too cold... and was impervious to avalanches... having jet-packs to get back up the mountain instead of lifts might be cool too... 8) :)

Beside the Alta snow the rest could be done. It doesn't have to be a fantasy. Doesn't seem to be any will among both sides to do it though. It's really a shame. :(
