Well, there are dozens of abandoned quarries out in that area. There are many more scattered across the state. Truth is that quarries are VERY dangerous to swim in...most often the depths are not consistent across, so that is one hazard (i.e. jagged bottom). Another big hazard is that when quarries were abandoned, the equipment, cables, and other items were simply dumped in them, so now one has lots of unseen items lurking somewhere down beneath the surface. To add insult to injury, these holes are often VERY deep and VERY remote making any needed rescue quite difficult! My advice...stay away.

I agree and most times you actually see the equipment, i.e. the cables leading to the crane. Once they hit water theres usually no pulling those machine out of there, WAY too far down.

The "hole" I was referring to didn't have those particular "hidden pitfalls" of typical quarries, but I totally agree with where you are coming from..I don't think i'd just JUMP unless I knew what I was jumping into.

East is best

This is one area where the east definately beats the west(CO, WY, MT). Out west we had a few beautiful lakes to swim in but the water is freezing until August whereas the northeast has more ponds, lakes and small swimming holes to swim in than you can shake a stick at.

Warren Falls, as TB mentioned is nice but way too popular. Like many New Englanders, we have a nice swimming hole behind our place in Waitsfield on a brook that feeds into the Mad River. So nice on a hot muggy day.

When I lived outside Bratt we used to swim in a quarry in West Dummerston. When you are travelling south on Rt 30 a few miles past Maple Valley there is a covered bridge(West Dummerston) on the left. As you drive past the bridge, looking across the river, you can see above the trees the walls of the quarry.
