When the hang will the weather turn for the better (winter sports-season-wise)?

I miss the days of Dr Dewpoint on intellicast.com. He used to put something up in late Oct/early Nov regarding the factors affecting a snowy winter. North Atlantic Oscilation, El Nino, etc.

I suppose the NOAA should have something. But no. Here's what the NOAA has to say about the NE region for this winter:

Northeast: Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and precipitation. Winter weather in this region is often driven not by El Niño but by weather patterns over the northern Atlantic Ocean and Arctic, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation. These patterns are often more short-term, and are generally predictable only a week or so in advance.

I can envision Homer Simpson shrugging his shoulders with the classic almost audible, "I don't know".

Gah!

All this talk of snowblowers and pass deadlines, new gear....I'm all pent up here!

*in through the nose...out through the mouth*

What allows me to keep from going too crazy with the less than ideal weather pattern we're currently in is that in previous years when we've had similar weather patterns, when it finally does break for good, it's usually really good for atleast a solid month or so! :snow:

This weather pattern has been really rough. Let's hope when the cold temps move in next week..they stay.

I am just waiting for my wife to issue that edict. It will come on the first sloppy day.

As I cleaned out the garage yesterday...I saw Mrs Sky's snow tires stacked in the back. Too early to put them on with this warm temp (they'll wear down like a gum eraser in temps above 60F).

But I can envision the lines @ the shop when it's finally time to load up.

I still need to wrap the Arbor Vitae in burlap to keep the deer off em. SO I'm hoping for reasonable temps on Sunday...or a break in the rain on Saturday. Last chore of the fall.

I haven't even thought about pulling my snow tires out of the basement yet.

I have thought about getting mine on. Mainly because I put it off so much last season that I never put them on once ski season started. I want to get some use out them this season. :dunce:

Mine have been sitting piled up in the kitchen for weeks. I thought I would have them on by now. Instead, I am starting to think of how long I can get away without having them on but not deal with the mad rush to mount that the first storm brings on. I am usually chasing storms by now....

I've been swapping them myself for about a decade. They are on wheels already. Not a big deal since I have a garage. It takes me about a hour per car for the whole shooting match. I do swear a lot if the last mechanic to service the car set the torque too high on his air gun  I got a long pipe for this season...

I've thought about this....getting snow tires on rims. It would be pretty easy to make the swap. But I never make that leap. Besides...I always combine the shop's effort with an oil change and an alignment. Seems like a waste to spend the time swapping the tires AND arranging the drop-off of the car.

If only we can get some downstream blocking (over Greenland) to pull in a trough into the Northeast (-NAO), we could get decent shot at better conditions. Could happen after next weekend....but ridging for us mostly til then.

It snowed in Idaho last night, and my mom sent me this picture to rub it in:

I'm ready for some snow out here, and not just of this :fangun: kind.

I've been doing snow tires on spare rims since 2001. If you shop around on the internet, you can usually find used wheels for cheap.
