Going to finally make it out this Friday for my first venture of the season (newborn has limited me thus far) and was wondering how it is out there based on certain spots. Not so concerned about crowds as much as quality of snow and the amount of expert terrain open. Who's been where and how is it?

I have passes for the following already, so might try to hit one of those preferably unless other suggestions:

Sunday River
Wildcat
Magic
'Loaf (Day trip, so you really have to convince me)
Stratton
Smuggs (Again, day trip from south of Boston)
Ascutney

Thanks.

Rather than reiterate, have you read the trip reports?

Yup...didn't see anything on Wildcat or Ascutney though....probably leaning toward the River or Stratton as my ticket expires Friday (Warren Miller). Thanks.

The special deal is Friday at Cranmore. Only $3.30 with roll-back prices to celebrate something. I stay at a ski house only 5 min from there - space available at $20 a night.

Maybe a few more $$ and time in the car but I would make my way to Mt Ellen at Sugarbush which opens this Friday

I concur with WWF. Mt. Ellen will be top-to-bottom pow on Friday... that's the place to be (just don't tell anyone  ).

See you there!

the problem with these cheapo rate is that it brings out every cheapskate and college kid playing hookie in the northeast. I have always avoided these days, since just about every report comes back mentioning the monster lift lines and scraped off conditions. But nobody complains for 3 an some change...

Magic says they will open before the weekend. Can anyone confirm this will really happen? What are the chances that some of their more difficult runs will be open?

electric connected, scotty!

You're not gonna believe this. I just called and spoke with the mountain. The electric company just got the power running today (Tuesday)! Problem is, there is some gear that is frozen up that will probably take 24 hours to thaw. I was hoping for Friday, but it could be too close. Saturday is much more certain. It sounds like they are NOT going to wait to make snow to before they open.

The good news, is that the problem is now out of the power corp's hands and into Magic's. They are going full tilt to get it open, this is their big $$ time. She said they will post an update as soon as everything they need is running, not a moment later.

Or, feel free to call them.

Wow, thats quite a story. I hope they are spinning the lifts on Saturday. Did you happen to ask them about what terrain is targetted to open? Would some of the tougher runs off red/black be open?

I'm thinking about MRG on Friday . . . Thoughts? Will Mt. Ellen at tha Bush be a better pick?

If you want untracked, Mt. Ellen is the way to go. If you want nice bump lines, MRG will have the better hand on Friday. Since Mt. Ellen hasn't been open yet, there will be pow on 80% of the on-piste, and the off-piste is practically untouched. It's going to be a truly epic day.

What a December!
