Hey, I'm new here. MOTO. Name's Steve if you missed my introduction in the new member's thread.

Anyhow, I'm going up to Sugarloaf next weekend for the first time and was wondering if anybody could give me the scoop. I understand there isn't a whole of partying to be done... besides our entertainment plans are already set. What I crave is the low down on the skiing.

I typically hit a couple blues to get warmed up then head for the fun stuff. Blacks, double blacks.. so on. I was reading on their website that the 'snow fields' have opened. What's that all about. That sounds right up my alley. Any, and all, info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

p.s. is cell service good on the mtn? Some of my friends are newbs and we need to hook for lunch, etc.

p.s.s where's the best place to buy fireworks in NH? I'm coming 95 from CT.:p

Seabrook. You can get a tattoo while you're there.

Thank you sir... Any personal accounts?

Unfortunately I haven't been up yet this year. Check out the forum at Sugarloaftoday. Most of those guys live up there and can give you the latest lowdown.

Snowfields are definitely worth doing, but they are not easy to do laps on since they drop you off on the opposite side of the mountain from the lift.

I will check into that site... just scanned it briefly. Thanks again

I can't speak for Sugarloaf's current conditions as I have not been up since January 22nd, but their neighbor Saddleback had tons of snow with nearly 100% cover on all trails two days ago with about 5-10' of base in most spots on the upper mountain.

With the recent rains and now a freeze up, alot of the steeper natural trails will probably be a no go until they get more natural snow.

today......

In looking at the temps, I would doubt any precip up at the mountain stayed as rain....more like wet snow. Temps are most always a good 10deg difference from the base area to Kingfield, and as anyone who's been up for ReggaeFest can attest to...it can be a balmy, shortsleeve day @ the base, yet be nice pp halfway up the mountain.

...my $.01 guess...

The loaf is my favorite mt.I just can't get there more than a few weekends a year. From now till the end of the year is the best imo.The snowfields are lots of fun especially on the backside. As mentioned before you need to take 2 lifts to get back to the top.I love skiing the very top of the loaf which has some real steep skiing.Upper White Nitro is cool and you can jump in and out around it and ski around small stubby trees.Anything off the Spillway crosscut is really nice.If you ski Spillway, use the longside chair(left looking up) to get to the crosscut.Get there and rip it up.

Sugarloaf is also my favorite mountain and I always wish it was an hour closer to home so I can spend more time there. I have never been on the snowfields but this may be the year it finally happens. The next few weeks are the best time to be there weather-wise. I won't repeat what everyone else has said but here are a few recommendations:

- don't overlook the runs off the King Pine and Timberline chair
- if they're open, take a run on Winter's Way and the other 'wild thing' (ungroomed) trails
- if it's sunny, enjoy a beer and sunbathe on the deck at Bullwinkle's
- get cheeseburger soup at the Bag
- take a breather at the building on top of the mountain and take in the views

Enjoy!

- get cheeseburger soup at the Bag

IIRC the last time I was up there they weren't serving the Cheeseburger Soup every day of the week. You had to catch it when it was the Soup of the Day. Although that might have been because it was early season.

When at the Bag a Bag Burger and a Bag Brown Ale are always a good choice too.
