Trip Report:
Contrary to what I thought, I have never been to Gore. I thought I had been once when I was younger, but I was misinformed. What a mountain.
We got there around 8:20 and got into the base lodge. Partly sunny with minimal wind.
I was very surprised how clean it was. Plenty of room to get changed. Quite a nice step up from Belleayre where you have to fight for a seat. Got out on the trails around 8:45.
Not knowing where I was going. I was one of those guys who you see staring at the map and pointing in all sorts of directions. We took the ADK Express triple up to the Saddle lodge area. My eye was immediately drawn to the High Peaks area, so we took a cross country trail to get to the High Peaks double. I won't get into every single trail I skied, but needless to say I spent a lot of time on that part of the mountain. Trails like Hulabaloo, Hawkeye, Upper Darby, and Open pit were among my favorite of the day. Chatiemac, and Rumor were closed, as were all of the glades. I wasn't upset over the limited terrain though, I was still breaking in a pair of new skis. Burnt Ridge was a great spot, NO ONE there. I assume a lot of people are turned off the the flatter trails you need to take to get there. The lower part of the mountain has some awesome long trails. We did some burner runs down trails like Wild air, Twister, Sagamore, Showcase, etc. My legs were on fire, but that's a good thing.
I thought the snow was skiing very well. Lots of loose stuff made it very fast. Around 11:45 or so, someone flipped the switch and the snow started to come down. I would say they probably got 1"-2" of fresh between 12:00 and 2:00. That turned a good day into a great day. The snow started to get pushed around and a lot of the steeper trails started to get bumped up. Love it! Everyone got out of the snow or crowded around the gondola, but we kept skiing and pretty much had a lot of the mountain to ourselves.
Overall, I loved the vibe of this mountain. The staff were the friendliest of any ski area I've been to. I couldn't believe it was a weekend, the lots were jammed but we never waited more than 30 seconds for a lift. We didn't ride the gondola but once at the end of the day, but that was the only lift with any kind of line. The trails were not congested at all, it felt like a Tuesday. It's definitely a skier's mountain. I found that most of the skiers and riders on this mountain were very respectful to others. I didn't get cut off once, didn't have any kids try to blow by me with 2 ft of snow between the trail and the trees. I'm fairly confident I'll become a Gore regular. It only took me an hour and 20 minutes to get there from Albany, I thought it took way longer. The glades looked killer, I hope they can get some open again this year but I doubt it.
