STOWE, Vermont — Slope - An inclined line, surface, plane, position, or direction. Style - The way in which something is done, expressed, or performed.
Put these two words together and you get one of the fastest growing competitive events in winter sports. The event originated over a decade ago as a snowboard specific competition heavily influenced by skateboarding. Slopestyle exists today as a contest for snowboarders and skiers that best represent the contemporary attitude and lifestyle of these sports.
The Stowe Slopestyle Series is a grassroots amateur competition that started at Stowe Mountain Resort four years ago. The series takes place in the resort's Tyro terrain park, and features multiple freestyle elements that set a unique course to challenge the skills of each skier & rider. The course includes tabletop jumps, rail-slides, boxes, and multiple lines through which the competitor may choose to perform. This format allows participants to display creativity in addition to their individual style and strengths. The creativity and style aspects of Slopestyle are at the roots of why this competition is so popular.
Stowe's competition uses a two run format, open to all ages and disciplines. Competitors are judged on the execution of spins and grabs, level of difficulty, trick execution, and overall impression of their run. The Stowe Slopestyle Series will take place over the course of three events this season on January 21, February 26 and April 1. Registration is from 8 a.m. -10 a.m. inside the Mansfield Base Lodge and competition begins at 11 a.m. Thousands of dollars in prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each age category at each event.
