My father is a pediatrician...he's ready to give up trying to make clear to many parents that for the most part, between the overfeeding and the choice of crap food, they're killing their kids.

Oh, and here's a little piece of info from their website, http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/honey/guides/mixed.html

Activity Avg. Calories Burned per Hour
Skiing (downhill, lightly) - 280

I burn more of that on cold days and when tree skiing, bump skiing, and on warm spring days when the snow is soft!

I hear ya there. I'm amazed when my wife tells me what the other kids in my daughter's day care eat on a daily basis. Apparently they think my wife is snobbish for actually taking the time to prepare our daughter a healthy meal and not allowing her to have any of the provided sugary snacks. Who knows what they're actually feeding her when we're not there though. That's one of the many reasons that my wife is 'changing careers' so that she can stay home with her during the day.

Wise move...my wife has been working at home raising our sons since my oldest David was 6 months old.

She tried working for 6 months, but couldn't justify the emotional expense for her and our sons not being with them. In that regard, the money involved is totally irrelevant.

Definitely agree, my wife quit her job and stayed home when our daughter was 4 months old. The stuff I hear the kids eat nowadays is terrible.

The other day, the two of them went to a McDonalds and was totally confused on what you can get. My wife didn’t know about the combinations and supersizing. My daughter didn’t know about the different flavors of milkshakes you can get. The guy at the counter was looking at them strange, wondering what planet did these two land from? It’s funny and satisfying in a way.

Classic!

My 2 oldest sons go to McDonald's and order salads...talk about weird looks!

Fast food is fine in moderation, 2 or 3 times a month isn't going to hurt anyone. It's a problem when it's the only thing on the menu for every meal.

My wife is lucky enough to be working at home now and looking after our two children (dogs - weimaraners). She plans on continuing to work from home when we have a little one of our own on the ground. I'll be missing my ski partner this winter. But if all goes well we will have another little skier in the family. I learned my lesson when it comes to food choices. We plan on raising our children with different eating habits than I had growing up (and my parents weren't as bad as the ones I see these days).

The amazing part is that it is so simple...little ones do what they see their parents do. Kids with bad eating habits are being raised by parents with bad eating habits. "Do as I say, not as I do" does not work with kids.

The show mentioned before, "Honey, we're killing the kids", is hard for me to watch. For the most part, the parents are basket cases; the adult eating habits are horrendous, and even when they see what their kids might look like (admittedly too dramatic), they still can't motivate to change their habits for their kids' own good.

It's utterly pathetic to watch adults moan about hating vegetables, missing all the fats and sweets, and craving a smoke because they're stressed out by healthy eating.

Bad habits and good habits are hard to break. Once you get started with healthy eating habits your tastes change. As I removed soda, processed foods, and desserts from my diet I started to crave fruits and veggies.

You're right...I don't have a reference because my parents were strict about good eating. I don't know any other way.

Processed foods and especially fats and carbs are addictive. Hard habits to overcome.

I should be more understanding and tolerant I guess.

Hear you, that's how I think about it too.

But there is evidence that fats and carbs really are addictive.

Perhaps they are, but doesn't it really end up being laziness and not caring that gets you hooked on the Biggie fries and Supersized double grease burger in the first place?

The worst thing to happen to health care in this country so far is having obesity labeled a "disease". Now the insurance company will pick up the tab for your gastric bypass.

Actually did an internship with a major health insurer. Sat near the nurses who called to give the ok for a procedure. By far the most common was g.b.:puke:
