Seems too complex, too much of a weight/space penalty, too expensive, maintenance nightmare.

This problem will be less of a concern with better batteries and plug in hybrids like the Volt, that only uses the IC engine to spin the generator, and is not mechanically coupled to the drive wheels.

I'd rather see Honda invest in this guy's research instead:

I've read about his research. Some exciting things brewing there.

Honda's system does seem complex, but they can always improve. It's certainly an interesting concept. As of now a hybrid benefits someone like me who does a lot of city driving. If something like this comes to fruition, it would benefit all kinds of drivers. (combined with regenerative breaking, of course)

I'd like to see them make convrntional a car that gets 50+ mpg like they did in the early 90's.
