Date(s) Skied: 12/10/11
Resort or Ski Area: Hunter Mt. NY
Conditions: PP/MM
Trip Report:
I was sure Platekill was going to be open today. I was looking forward to going, but alas they did not open. When I saw Hunter was charging $28 for their WROD, seemed like a no brainer. Got there and waited in line for 1/2 hr. I was on the third chair. Not too bad conditions wise. Some nasty death cookies on the early runs. It got cramped pretty quick. Then the F chair broke. I was on the lift when it stopped. Sat there for five or ten minutes, thought I was getting evacuated for the second time.Guy on a snowmobile comes up the hill, stops at the tower right in front of me. Climbs up, fiddles with the lift, chairs start moving. I get off, ski back down, the chair is not working. I stood in line to dowload, never rode a chair down the hill before.
Everyone was just skiing down to the base. I thought about it, I just got my skis tuned. Figured I'd had enough. Brooks' BBQ in Oneonta was calling me. I don't know how long the chair was down? I got about eight runs in, it was enough, too crowded. The conditions were pretty good, they turned the guns on. The top skied real nice. The steeper part of Hellgate was getting scraped pretty good in spots. Just hardpack underneath, zero ice. Still skied pretty well. Lots of carnage there, gates.
I think I may have had my fill of early season turns. I may run up to Greek if they open next weekend. Don't think I'll stay too long if I do. It'll be Winter soon.
Hell-gate, frozen over.
