Resort or Ski Area: Hunter Mountain
Conditions: Packed Powder, Hard Packed
Trip Report:
Overall a decent day on the mountain after the nasty warm weather we've had. A few periods of snow, but nothing to write home to mom about. There was a lot of snow making across the mountain.
The mountain was mostly hard packed - packed powder. I stayed on Hunter Mountain, did one run on Hunter West and stayed off Hunter One.
Here are some additional comments:
I started off the morning on Belt Parkway. The snow guns were blasting on the upper mountain getting brutal ice on skiers' and snowboarders' goggles. The rest of the trail was pretty well covered varying from packed powder to hard pack. I think White Cloud would be a good alternative to avoid the most annoying snowguns, but I didn't get a chance to try it.
The bottom of the mountain, around the AA lift (high speed quad), there were a lot of bumps starting at the beginning of the day. I'm guessing they had them to slow people down as they came to the lift lines. I was not a big fan of them there. I hope they groom it out.
Hellgate was hard packed. I feared that there might have been some ice underneath, but did not encounter any. Hellgate usually gets bumped up by the traffic by the end of the day. Today it kept it's shape throught the day, maybe it was due to the lack of packed powder?
There was snow making on Lower Crossover, but I didn't get it on my goggles. A steady wind was making the snow fall in the trees instead of on the trails. Too bad..
The F-lift (mid-mountain 3 seater) was getting a lot of traffic. I'm guessing they don't usually put up line barriers on this lift, but by the afternoon the lines were getting pretty messy that they brought up the barriers.
