Is 3D overrated?

I think so. I've watched Up and Avatar, which was highly touted for the 3D aspect, and was underwhelmed to say the least. I'm not paying the money for that again.

Now they are converting films shot in 2D to 3D because studios are so horny for the extra revenue. TV manufacturers are trying to make home versions, some of which you'll still need glasses for which strikes me as ridiculous.

Seems kinda silly to me, but I haven't seen any of the recent 3D offerings so I have no idea how good they are (or not). I saw a commercial for a 3D LCD TV last night, where the family was sitting there watching it with glasses on. That's not anything that I feel the need for anytime too soon.

...not to mention that with what those glasses cost, we'd be out a small fortune quickly with how our kids treat things.

Cool idea... but it seems kinda silly. I'd rather not have to wear special glasses to watch TV. It's bad enough I have to wear contacts/regular glasses.

I don't watch much TV. We don't even have a flat screen TV at home.

+2 on the flat screen.

I own two tube TVs. A JVC 36" from 1997 in my bedroom and a 27" Sony in my living room. I gave away nice 36" Sony Wega XBR.

I'll likely buy a flat screen for my cottage once I move in. The technology keeps improving so I've been trying to hold off as long as possible.

Haven't been to a modern 3D movie. I don't think it would add much to the experience. Definitely not paying extra to have it in my house.

Haven't seen 3D since I was a kid. An interesting novelty for a little kid but as an adult, I don't see the extra value and can see it as a distraction (then again, I haven't seen one recently but how much better could it really be?).

Saw on the news yesterday that Samsung, largest manufacturer of the 3D TV's put out a warning that this may not be 'comfortable' for all viewers. I guess they've received a lot of complaints reguarding motion sickness, eyes aching, and they recomend not to watch regular TV and go right to 3D. Biggest 'warning' of all.... do not be drunk and watch 3D!

I have a pretty sweet hd t.v. but no cable t.v. and not even hooked up to get local networks. I watch movies occasionly with it but can honestly say my life has significantly inproved since unhooking the thing in more ways than I could have ever imagined.

I did see Avatar in 3D and yes, I was very impressed. This is very cool. The modern 3D technology is trully breathtaking. That's what got me back into the move theater.
As a matter of fact, I'm really looking forward to seeing Alice in Wonderlad in 3D and catching some of the Imax shows that the NE Aquarium (in Boston) screens in 3D. The 3D effect is just fantastic. Just let your mind go and enjoy the ride.

Am I likely to spend money on getting it on my TV? Not really, but if there is someting that's visually attractive when seen on on the big screen, sure, I'll make the time to watch it.

I'd like to demo a 3D TV at best buy or something... Doubt purchasing would approve it though.

My GF treated me to an IMAX 3D movie today. The 3D look is 100% more effective than 3D on a non-IMAX screen. I was way more impressed.

Better than an Omni movie?

After seeing several movies in the Mugar Omni theatre, I have to say I was less than impressed the first time I saw a standard IMAX film. Omni rocks.
