Date(s) Skied: January 25, 2012
Resort or Ski Area: Jackson Hole, WY
Conditions: snowing, powder, high winds and very low vis.
Trip Report: If I had visited Jackson before I moved to CO I think I may have ended up there instead. We were debating on whether or not to head here and when we were searching their website Jim saw a picture of a high school friend on Jackson Holes "photo of the day" in waist deep pow. He got in touch with them and they were willing to hook us up with some vouchers and all that jazz so it was a pretty easy decision for us to go.
Got there pretty early around 9:30 and ran into one of Jim's high school friends which was really nice. Jackson Hole is impressive. They had gotten a lot of snow in the past week or two so Avi warnings were high... Jim's buddy took us around the mountain which was awesome since we couldn't see a thing and would have had no idea where to go. Unfortunately I really have no information on trails we rode or pictures...I was more concerned with concentrating where my skis were going and paying attention to the mountain. Terrain was tough and we were wiped from skiing hard the past three days already. After a couple runs we took the Tram up to the top which actually got put on pause mid way up because the winds were whipping at the summit. We got out of the tram at the top and I was pretty much blown over. (winds were ~60mph) It was like skiing in a glass of milk...I thought I was stopped at one point but when I glanced down my skis were definitely moving. A little icy up top but snow conditions got better half way down...didn't help the vis but at least we weren't sliding anymore. We took Rendezvous Bowl down into Wally World (trees) There was nice powder stashes in the trees and some good drops. Mostly expert terrain for sure. A week up at Jackson Hole and IMO your skiing should improve. Following vdk03's friend around made all the difference for us. The snow was awesome but it was a shame we couldn't see anything. If we had been up here the day we hit GT it probably would have been awesome. We were there on a Wednesday planning to go home the next day. We woke up on Thursday and the snow was falling and it just looked and felt like perfect snow. Forecast called for a clear day on Friday but unfortunately it just wasn't in our budgets to push and stay for one more night. I will be back up that way again....I hope sooner than later.
Rest of the day was spent following Jim's buddy around to the good spots til he split and had to go to work. The three of us took another four or so runs and called it a day. Between all the riding and partying we were wiped. Had a good night out in Jackson..went to the brewery and met up with more of Jim's high school friends. All in all..
Winning.
