Today was a nutty day at Jay to say the least. Last night, I noticed on there web site that they spin the lifts from 8a-4p. I thought I missed something new. Did they change their lift opening and not publicize it? Apparently, I just wasn't thinking straight. I completely forgot about the condo lift... I assume it opens at 8a because apparently I got up half an hour early thinking Jay had changed their hours  Okay, that was my bad, but the day just continued to get more weird.
The groomers were just starting to roll out the beginner area by the magic carpet when I arrived. Two groomers were out for 45 minutes in the area in front of Tram side lodge before any mountain lifts turned. So by 9:15am, I was finally on the first tram of the season. Met RR next run at the Freezer and got in three more runs before the Freezer broke (I am losing count of the number of times Jay has had broken lifts this season). Headed over Stateside for a while because the tram line was long (but at least it was indoors, woo!!!). Came back for one more tram run before leaving. Unloading the tram involved stepping up about 2' from the tram car to the platform Dangerous to say the least with a big 1.5' opening below the platform. Two out of three clocks in the Tram lodge were broken too. I'd like to chalk a lot of this up to first week of full operation of Tramside, the Tram, and the Freezer... but it was a whole lot of weird. Still had a fab time.
Three inches of fluff on top of a firm and sometimes frozen base. Expo Glade had the goods with up to half a foot with some deeper drifts. Just sensational runs through there. Run of the day was U River to Expo, damn fine. Most other on map woods Tramside were skiable but really need another foot of snow and a softer base. Glades stateside were of course tracked out, bumped, and firm. Off map glades not yet ready for prime time with an additional 1-2' of boomer base needed. Jay is reporting in with almost 50 trails and glades open. The truth is all but a dozen trails are skiable. The worst conditions are on the run outs and flat sections at the bottom near the lodge. Kokomo was down right scary and kept me off JFK. Ullr's and a few other trails still had a few water bars. You gotta hand it to Jay... they are always at the fore front of opening trails in questionable conditions and I appreciate that. Should be skiing pretty well across the board by next weekend after another storm or two.
Its funny how people around here are always surprised to here that I drive to Jay two dozen times a season when Cannon, Loon, and Tenney are all right in the area. Nice to ski trees every run when the local mountains barely have more than a few groomers open.
