Conditions: PP, scraped of ice
We did not really plan to ski on Saturday, because we were going to be attending a funeral of my uncle. However, the funeral was at 11 and done before noon and we kept our time at the reception short and sweet by visiting the key family members - all aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters and a few cousins. I have 64 cousins - not enough time to talk to them all. My wife and I looked at each other and figured that we should go for it and headed to Jay Peak (30 minutes away) - we had comp tickets. We got there a little after 1 and got our gear on and made non stop runs, for the most part.
Our first trip was up Flyer (stopped 3 times) Down Ullrs, the conditions were pretty good until we got to the entrance of Beaver Pond and Andrea's Paradise. That turn got icy. This first run would set the theme for the day. Lift stoppages and icy stops! However we did find out that the goods were in the woods!
I will not do a play by play but we rode Bonnie 4 times with at least one stoppage every ride. Rode Flyer 3 times with only one trip without a stoppage. We even stopped on Metro. Now, I have been a fan of Jay Peak for many many years - it was my home mountain growing up. This day, I was not impressed. I think it is starting to get too much traffic which is resulting in scraped off sections of trail. Trail intersections are often crowded now, very narrow trails like Taxi - forgetaboutit! There are also some advanced trails that people seem to want to ski or snowboard but try and do a nice job at pushing snow off the trail (Power Line and Can Am). Told a snowboarder, who was sliding sideways all the way down, to carve on Can Am.
So a break down of icy spots! Goat Run - well that goes with out saying it is always that way. Can Am was groomed flat and had white ice that is not visible which caused slipping on turns. Overall not bad, but at speed is a little freaky. Northway intersection with Angel's Wiggle - a mess and too many people! WedelMaster - lots of spots scraped to the point where the snow was brown. Lower Goat was not good either because that section is where every one slams the breaks on - we ducked into Buck Woods which was decent. Lower Everglade was decent as well with good snow. Entrance to Beaver Pond was sketchy but was better once you were further down where it is not as steep.
We did not have much time and it was late afternoon skiing - which probably contributed to my attitude. We did have fun with it and enjoyed the afternoon! We ended the day with the Ride and Ski Party in the International Room. Overall glad we went, but Jay Peak is losing its luster IMO.
An entrance to Deliverance (never made it but looked good)
