Resort or Ski Area: Jay Peak, VT

Conditions: Spring, Sunny, 70s

Trip Report:

Got up to the mountain at 12:15... watched my thermometer rise from 62 on the Lyndon side of Sheffield heights to 73 on the Barton side. Topped out at 78 as I drove through Troy. Unlike last week when Bonnie was the place to be and Jet was the worst area, today was the opposite. It was almost too warm at Bonnie while everything at the Jet was beautiful. Also, the Flyer was down all day, making for occasional lines at the Tram and Metro.

Started off on Can-Am which still has great coverage, but the troughs in between the big bumps were quite icy and not that much fun. Figured with the warmth Jet would be in good shape so I headed that way. Hit Derick and UN which both had much better bumps (although the UN bumps were very tight, and me being a sucky mogul skier had some problems haha). Hit Kitz to Kitz woods next... Kitz also had some nice bumps, and the woods are still well covered but the undermining is a bit scary in the untracked areas right now.

Headed over to Tramside next and hit Expo to Flash. Expo didn't have any bumps (must've been groomed overnight and the Flyer being down meant little traffic), and Flash is getting thin. Waited 15 mins for a tram ride back up, and hit Green Beret. The first cliff is pretty hairy now... you either have to huck it into a crappy area or ski over rocks to get around it, so if you like your skis stay away. Otherwise, it was in nice shape... the 2nd cliff was a lot easier to either launch or go around.

Finished up hitting Haynes, Jet, Timbuktu, and Kitz once more. Haynes was groomed overnight but had a few small bump lines, same for Jet. Timbuktu is still well covered except a few highly-traveled lines that sit in the sun. Very fun skiing on that side today.

I'll be at Burke sometime this week to salvage what they have left, and back to Jay next weekend. Sucks that everything's coming to an end so early, but the skiing is great for now so go get it while its there.

Thanks Zand. We've had a long scheduled trip to Jay the 29th-1st and are wondering what we might find at that point considering the weather. Just the amount of trails you skied tells me there might be some more life left for a couple weeks. One can hope, right???

You will probably need to get there today or tomorrow. The area around the lift is not going to last long and the head walls of the main trails are getting thin.

Can't make it till Wednesday... hopefully they can hang on till then.

Stateside should last. You'll still be able to walk to JFK and Ullr's for turns. It's going though. Can't imagine they can keep the tram going, down to 2' of snow on the N. side (in the shade), the bottom of the flyer wil melt out by BBP, etc., if it cools down they can move it around, but there isn't even that much to move around.

won't know till you go. who knows, maybe a huge powder day.

Problem with the powder day scenario is the ground has got to be thawing out so it would take quite a storm to cover stuff up at this point I would think.....very true tho about the "won't know until you go". Just not the same as our usual 4 day trips to Jay every year with the boys skiing the woods for 4 straight days. Well perhaps this will just be a beach party kind of year for our annual trip!
