Date(s) Skied: Feb. 20-21, 2010

Resort or Ski Area: Jay Peak

Conditions: Powder, especially on Feb. 21 (6 inches overnight); Packed Powder; Temps in the low 20s; very windy

Trip Report: The Tram was not running both days due to windhold. I basically skied in the afternoon of Saturday the 20th. I took the Flyer up and down and froze half of my face. The trails on that side of Jay were windblown and icy so it was all glades skiing. Staircase and Everglades had soft snow but were getting scraped off due to skier traffic. Snapped a pole in Staircase (an offering to Ullr for the goodness to follow) and had to rent. Best snow was in Beaver Pond. Took the Flyer up at 3 PM and freezing rain was coming down. Goggles were a block of ice. Getting down Poma Line was tricky but Andre's Paradise/Beyond Beaver Pond made it worth it. When I got down, they shut down the Flyer because of the ice so I called it a day.

Sunday was a powder day. Took the Quad then to the Bonnie for semi-first tracks (I can't beat the locals!). Can-Am was unbelievable. Powder turns all the way. Ducked into Deliverance and made tracks where I could. Basically, I tried to hit every glade I could find -- even the lower level glades were not spared. I saw some guys hiking out from Timbuktu. Thought of following but turned back. Kitz Woods, Vertigo, Expo Woods, Hell's Woods, North Woods, the woods between UN and the Jet, the Moonwalk woods, -- they were all skiing well and deep. There was some untracked stuff in there even in the afternoon. After Sunday, I no longer have any desire to ski out west. The Jay cloud is all I need.

Pics are all from Sunday:

Great great stuff!

We were up in Sutton for a change on saturday instead of Jay... Freezin R. got in at about 3PM... Snow was amazing all day... we gave up at 3:30PM because we got tired of stuff freezin our goggles...

Fun to see nice TRs from Jay... Nice to see people who "get" what Jay is. Conditions weren't too good on the groomers but the woods never felt the R*** of saturday and the new 6in of snow made it all disapear.

Expo glade was great all day and so was Everglade. Never had to check Beaver Pond because snow was so good everywhere!

TheBEast, it looks like the forecast is trending in your favor. Good luck and have fun!

salsgang, go for it! They have Casablanca-like glades all over the place.

BigJay, if Jay were an hour closer, I'd be there more than once a season. I love the glade skiing there. The trails are links to get to the glades, as far as I am concerned. I hope to do some stuff off the map someday. I met some folks who were planning to ski Big Jay from the Tram (directions courtesy of the Goodman book). AFAIK, the trail up top is boarded up/closed. Anyway, it became moot because the Tram never ran.

By the way, though it's not connected to the skiing, the on-mountain food at Jay is probably the best I've ever had!

You must be refering to Alice's Table or the food at the Tower Bar?

Cafeteria food at Jay is the worst... Too pricey and not too healthy... Salad and 2 Sandwiches (for 2) will run over 20$ without anything to drink...

The new THL is helping a lot!

^ I was referring to the coffee bar beside, Alice's Table. I think it's called Aroma. Good sandwiches, paninis and baked goods. I had the Deliverance (ham&cheese panini) and it was good. Price was reasonable for what you got. I stayed at Hotel Jay on one of those breakfast and dinner inclusive deals and both meals were great. Never really had anything from the cafeteria except the poutine. I guess if you throw gravy over anything, it'll taste good. I look forward to skiing with you someday, BigJay.

Ok then, i get it, you picked all the right places to eat! Nice!

So you must had a great experience at Jay! Last week i heard of someone who hated jay on her first visit for many reasons:
- Seeing 20in in the last week, she was expecting powder on the trails
- She couldn't find proper glades to ride for her hability (too steep / too narrow)
- She ate at the cafeteria

Yeah, it is a special place up here.

And by the way, "Poutine" can be awsome... but the "real" stuff isn't close to the Jay version... There is a great stop in Bromont (a local cheese producer) who has by far the best poutine in the region.

Let it snow!

Nice TR and pics. I'm glad that you went to Jay because I spent the weekend studying and working. I was up pretty late Friday night and studied most of the day Saturday and part of Sunday. To top it off, I was violently ill on Sunday night and spent much of Monday's train trip sleeping instead of studying...I would have been SOL had I gone skiing.

Another time...there's lots of season left.
