Date(s) Skied: 2/1/04, 9:30 AM - 3:15 PM

Resort or Ski Area: Jiminy Peak, Hancock, Massachusetts

Conditions: Fantastic! True packed powder (many resorts will report packed powder regardless of what the surface really is, but this day at Jiminy truly was packed powder. Nice, soft 2-3 inches of powder on top of a very edgeable base). Some scratchies here and there; very little ice. Some powder stashes by the sides. Bright sunshine, bluebird skies, some wind early.

Trip Report: We were sitting down on the six right about 9:30 AM which was plenty early considering two of us came up from southwestern CT. The weather looked promising with partly sunny skies and some light flurries early. First run off the six was West Way to Grand Slam. We were met with the customary strong wind coming around the bend. Conditions in this area were pretty slick, but once we passed North Glade, plenty of packed powder could be found. We then took another ride up the six to West Way (less wind by the cliffs this time) and hit the Foxes. The only moguls to be found on the mountain today were on skier's right of the Foxes. They were kind of erratically spaced, but still provided some needed bump practice. Another ride up the six to do North Glade to 360. Next run off the six was Whitetail which was the slickest so far. We then boarded the Q1 Quad for runs down Jericho and Wild Turkey. We then took the remaining black and blue runs off the Widow White's Quad (Noreaster/Left Bank, Panorama/Left Bank, Easy Does It/Cutter/Left Bank). Then another ride up the six to do the Foxes again and then lunch at Christiansen's (a total of ten runs before lunch).

After lunch we repeated many of the same runs including the Foxes, North Glade, Whitetail, Jerico, Noreaster, Cutter, and finished off on Grand Slam. The only main runs on the mountain that we didn't do were Ace of Spades and Whirlaway/Exibition (race). The sun softened things up nicely. There was a nice hit at the junction of Lower Glade and West Way which had a nice powdery landing. The day was absolutely perfect. Relatively calm, bluebird skies, and bright sun. With temps in the 20's, it was the perfect ski day. Never a wait on either of the quads or the triple which we rode once. Only about a 5 minute wait for the 6 and the lifties kept things moving well. We skied for almost 6 hours (with a 30 minute lunch break) and probably got almost twenty runs in due to the lack of lift lines. Probably the best day out so far this season!

Yes, it can get pretty windy at Jiminy. West Way by the cliffs, the top couple hundred feet of the steeps, and sometimes at the top of Widow's White are the worst. It's not always windy, but soon after a storm, count on wind. Even yesterday being relatively calm, we saw some wind here and there throughout the day; moreso in the AM.
